Empowered with Faith, Prayer and Gratitude!

A letter to Kashmiri Muslims and all other Muslims facing trials:

Dear Muslim brothers and sisters,

As the world is changing, and evil is rearing its ugly head yet once again, and you caught up in the eye of the storm, I would like to share with you some lessons from The Quran to help you endure the trials you are experiencing. Please remember that your suffering is not in vain. It is part of Allah's great plan to deliver the believers and establish His Laws, so that evil is forever contained and the believers flourish forever!

The Fath and The Deen
The Victory (الْفَتْحُ) has been promised, when the Deen of Allah (دِينِ اللَّهِ) will be established over all religions. It is not expected to be a peaceful transition. We await a war, and expect lives will be lost. While we await Allah's help, we need to take lessons from the nations who suffered similarly before us, and the advice they received through their prophets and messengers.

Bani Israel: Enslavement and The Promise of Exodus
The most recent example that we find well-detailed in The Quran is that of the Bani Israel. They settled in Egypt while Prophet Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) held a key position in the Egyptian government (Q12:55). The Bani Israel were eventually enslaved in Egypt. Joseph had already foretold the liberation of the Bani Israel, yet people did begin to doubt:

And Joseph had already come to you before with clear proofs, but you remained in doubt of that which he brought to you, until when he died perished, you said, 'Never will Allah send a messenger after him.' Thus does Allah leave astray he who is a transgressor and skeptic."
[Al-Quran, 40:34, Translation: Sahih International; edited in italics]

Eventually, when Moses (Musa عليه السلام) received his mission, the Exodus didn’t happen right away. Before destroying nations for their injustices (zulm), Allah always gives many chances and allows the people to establish the evidence for or against themselves:

And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction.
And how many have We destroyed from the generations after Noah. And sufficient is your Lord, concerning the sins of His servants, as Acquainted and Seeing.
[Al-Quran, 17:16-17, Translation: Sahih International]

The Great Trial
The Bani Israel suffered greatly at the hand of Pharaoh and his forces, who were killing their sons and letting their women live. We must remember it was a great trial from Allah:

And [recall] when We saved your forefathers from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
[Al-Quran, 2:49, Translation: Sahih International; edited in italics]

Faith, prayer and gratitude were the weapons the Bani Israel were given at that time:

But no one believed Moses, except [some] youths among his people, for fear of Pharaoh and his establishment that they would persecute them. And indeed, Pharaoh was haughty within the land, and indeed, he was of the transgressors
And Moses said, "O my people, if you have believed in Allah , then rely upon Him, if you should be Muslims."
So they said, "Upon Allah do we rely. Our Lord, make us not [objects of] trial for the wrongdoing people
And save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people."
And We inspired to Moses and his brother, "Settle your people in Egypt in houses and make your houses [facing the] qiblah and establish prayer and give good tidings to the believers."
[Al-Quran, 10:83-87, Translation: Sahih International]

And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days of Allah." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
And [recall, O Children of Israel], when Moses said to His people, "Remember the favor of Allah upon you when He saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst torment and were slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' "
And Moses said, "If you should disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely - indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy."
[Al-Quran,  14:5-8, Translation: Sahih International; typo edited; translation edited in italics]

Eventually, Allah completely destroyed the Ancient Egyptians, such that not one is alive today. The Bani Israel were delivered and flourished while their leaders adhered to The Torah:

And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so do not be in doubt over his meeting. And we made the Torah guidance for the Children of Israel.
And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.
[Al-Quran, 32:23-24, Translation: Sahih International]

When War Comes

And the Jews say, "The hand of Allah is chained." Chained are their hands, and cursed are they for what they say. Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills. And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. And We have cast among them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindled the fire of war [against you], Allah extinguished it. And they strive throughout the land [causing] corruption, and Allah does not like corrupters.
[Al-Quran, 5:64, Translation: Sahih International]

We must hold on to The Quran and keep praying to Allah to help us keep our duty, in peace and in wartime:

Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah , so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah ? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment.
[Al-Quran, 9:111, Translation: Sahih International]

While we await, we must also prepare for the war to the best of our capacity and capability:

And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah . Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.
But if they intend to deceive you - then sufficient for you is Allah . It is He who supported you with His help and with the believers
And brought together their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have brought their hearts together; but Allah brought them together. Indeed, He is Exalted in Might and Wise.
O Prophet, sufficient for you is Allah and for whoever follows you of the believers.
[Al-Quran, 8:60-64, Translation: Sahih International]

It is for the head of a Muslim state to declare war or sign peace treaties. The Muslims must respond when their leader declares a war to liberate the oppressed:

So let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter. And he who fights in the cause of Allah and is killed or achieves victory - We will bestow upon him a great reward.
And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?"
Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah , and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Taghut. So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.
Have you not seen those who were told, "Restrain your hands [from fighting] and establish prayer and give zakah"? But then when fighting was ordained for them, at once a party of them feared men as they fear Allah or with [even] greater fear. They said, "Our Lord, why have You decreed upon us fighting? If only You had postponed [it for] us for a short time." Say, The enjoyment of this world is little, and the Hereafter is better for he who fears Allah. And injustice will not be done to you, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed]."
[Al-Quran, 4:74-77, Translation: Sahih International; typo edited]

Those who are suffering oppression now, and demanding war, must be prepared to respond to the call of duty when called; and not become like the Bani Israel after Moses passed away:

Have you not considered those who left their homes in many thousands, fearing death? Allah said to them, "Die"; then He restored them to life. And Allah is full of bounty to the people, but most of the people do not show gratitude.
And fight in the cause of Allah and know that Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.
Have you not considered the assembly of the Children of Israel after [the time of] Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs, "Send to us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allah "? He said, "Would you perhaps refrain from fighting if fighting was prescribed for you?" They said, "And why should we not fight in the cause of Allah when we have been driven out from our homes and from our children?" But when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, except for a few of them. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
[Al-Quran, 2:243-246, Translation: Sahih International]

Forty-Seven
Isn’t it amazing that:
Surah Muhammad (also known as Surah al-Qital) is the forty-seventh surah in The Quran.
The forty-seventh ayat of Surah ar-Rum declares divine help as the right of the Believers. (also see Q10:103)
Pakistan received its independence in 1947 with the slogan:

What is the meaning of Pakistan?
There is no god but Allah.

The scholars have been citing ahadith foretelling a war with India (ghazwa-e-hind). Perhaps this is the beginning of the end. Nobody can know exactly when will be the end, as Allah has withheld that knowledge (Q7:187). However, to quote from Surah Muhammad:

Then do they await except that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come [some of] its indications. Then what good to them, when it has come, will be their remembrance?
So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place.
Those who believe say, "Why has a surah not been sent down? But when a precise surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is hypocrisy looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them [would have been]
Obedience and good words. And when the matter [of fighting] was determined, if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them.
[Al-Quran, 47:18-21, Translation: Sahih International; typo edited]

Do read the entire Surah Muhammad, and from the other surahs quoted in this letter for a clearer reference to context.

Say, [O Muhammad], "My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised,
My Lord, then do not place me among the wrongdoing people."
And indeed, We are able to show you what We have promised them.
Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe.
And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,
And I seek refuge in You, my Lord , lest they be present with me."
[Al-Quran, 23:93-98, Translation: Sahih International]

May Allah increase us in guidance and taqwa, and grant us sabr, salah and shukr, and help us, and make us victorious against the disbelievers. Aameen.

The Case against Organ Transplant

Organ transplants are being hailed as noble deeds! According to my understanding of The Quran, organ harvesting and organ transplant violate the commandments of The Law (الدِّينُ) according to which we will be judged by The True King on The Day of Judgement (مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ). We have been created with materials from the Earth, and we continue to exist after death, even after we perish. Moreover, our dust will be resurrected in the Hereafter, and be judged. We need to exercise great caution and let the scriptures guide us in matters we do not really know anything about, and therefore cannot reach any conclusion by reason alone. After all, we can only see a tiny portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, and most things are not even visible to us. We need to repent from our transgressions against The Law (الدِّينُ) if we hope to return to The Garden (الْجَنَّةَ) . Kindly consider the following references from the scriptures, and my questions thereafter:

References from the Scripture

 _ Aspects of our Existence
The Quran [67:2] informs us that Allah has created Death and Life to test us, and the purpose of this temporal life is to give us an opportunity to save ourselves from the penalty of The Fire [Q3:191-192; Q32:13; Q38:85; Q40:7-9; Q42:1-5]. The Quran informs us about the moments of death when the person is being questioned [Q6:93; Q7:37; Q8:50; Q16:28; Q47:27-28]. It also informs us that the person will remain in his/her grave in an experience consequent to its beliefs and actions in this temporal life, and then will be raised again for judgement and eternal existence [Q56]. People who have not done well in this life, plead for another chance, but are not allowed to return across the barrier which separates the two realms [Q23:100].

 _ Constituents of our Creation
The Bible [Genesis 3:19] and The Quran [30:20; 32:7; 55:14] both state that we humans are created from materials from the Earth. Allah has created bashr from water and assigned families and in-laws [Q25:54]. We also have a nafs which is in pledge [Q7:172-174; Q74:38]. As the water stops flowing through the body upon death, the body starts to perish [Q67:28-30]. The nafs is removed and returned daily to the living, [Q6:60; Q39:42], while it is permanently removed from the dead, to be reunited upon resurrection. The people who are forgiven will be able to retain their nafs, and will be reunited with those of their ancestors, spouses and progeny who have also been forgiven and retained their nafs [Q13:23]. The people who are put in The Fire on The Day of Judgement will lose their nafs and their families, and they, which means their body which is made of dust, will burn in Hell forever [Q6:70; Q11:106-107; Q39:15].
So, it follows that wherever The Quran is speaking about creation (خَلَقَ), it is essentially speaking about our physical self, our body, the materials of the Earth and the water!

 _ Corruption of Creation
Allah does not like corruption, and warns us against changing His creation [Q30:30]. Early on in The Quran, attention is drawn to the corrupters who don't even realise that they are doing corruption [Q2:11-12].

 _ Universal Laws of Creation
The Quran [30:30] clearly warns against changing the creation of Allah, with the focus on how He has separated humans:

So set your face to the religion upright.
Separation by Allah (upon) which He has separated humans.
No change (should there be) in the creation (of) Allah.
That (is) the religion the correct,
but most people (do) not know.
 [Al-Quran 30:30, Translation edited]
Note: فِطْرَتَ is generally translated as nature but فَطَرَ means to separate, and Allah is فَاطِرِ  the One who separated/separates.
Also, الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ is generally translated as the religion the correct, but The Standing Law may be a clearer literal translation. However, I haven't made this correction here.

The Quran is quite clear that the same deen [الدِّينِ] was given to all the messengers and prophets [Q42:13], while each has their own law [شِرْعَةً] [Q5:43 onwards]. The phrase الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ defines the three standing laws in Q9:36, Q12:40 and Q30:30 They seem to be the fundamental and eternal governing principles, the universal laws! Q30:43 urgently exhorts compliance and warns of the consequences; and Q98:5 summarises thus:

And not they were commanded except to worship Allah (being) sincere to Him (in) the religion, upright, and to establish the prayer, and to give the zakah And that (is the) religion the correct.

The Quran emphasises on sincerity in deen [الدِّينِ], and is very clear that Allah has sent the messenger  with guidance and the true deen [دِينِ الْحَقِّ] so that His deen shall prevail over all other deens [Q9:33; Q48:28; Q61:9]. The Quran refers to that time in future as the Days of Allah [أَيَّامِ اللَّهِ] [Q14:5; Q45:14] when everyone will be judged by Allah's deen, and recompensed according to what they did. Just as Moses was sent to Pharaoh, similarly we have been sent a Messenger as a witness [Q73:15]. We must move away from all false systems and sincerely submit to the Lord of the Kaaba [Q106:3; Q109:6], seeking help through prayer [Q98:5]. While Satan tries to tempt us to change creation [Q4:119], we are already under a covenant with Allah to not to obey Satan [Q36:60].

_ Saving a Life is like Saving all Mankind
Famously, people quote Q5:32 to justify organ transplant's role in saving life. The ayat begins with 'Because of that... ' Looking up the preceding ayaat, one realises that its about human violence against another, so then Q5:32 should mean that saving one life and saving mankind means saving people from violence. Q5:32 also speaks about corruption, and in my understanding, the organ recipient's body (its dust) does get corrupted by another person's organ (dust). If my understanding is correct, then the people involved in the process become corrupters.

Moreover, Q5:32 states that this had been decreed for the Bani Israel, who being the custodians of The Torah, are under a ratified covenant with God. As custodians of The Quran, Muslims are similarly responsible for implementing the teachings of The Quran. We read about Messenger Shoaib warning his people against depriving people of their things [Q7:85].

 _ Some Pertinent Questions
Kindly consider the following questions before passing any law for or against organ transplants:
  • Is ignorance of law a valid excuse, admissible in court?
  • Isn't the Allah the King of the Day of Judgement
  • Doesn't the Quran exhort sincerity in Deen (الدِّينَ)?
  • Saving a life is a noble act, but violating a universal law ( الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ ) is a crime. Is it okay to commit a crime to save a life?
  • Haven't humans been created of materials from the Earth (طِينٍ || تُرَابٍ)?
  • Doesn't fatir (فَاطِرِ) literally mean the Separator?
  • Is Q30:30 separation of humans as done by Allah being upheld?
  • Is Q30:30 no change in the creation of Allah being upheld?
  • Do scientists know what exactly happens at the moment(s) of death?
  • Do scientists know for sure that there is no form of existence post-death?
  • Are people not being deprived of their things when their organs are harvested?
  • If it is not okay to remove organs of a sleeping or unconscious person, then why is it okay to remove a dead person's organs?
  • Isn't adding a harvested organ corrupting the dust of the recipient?
  • Is life-extension permissible?
  • Wasn't Adam attempting immortality when he disobeyed in The Garden (الْجَنَّةَ)?
  • Wasn't Adam thrown out of The Garden (الْجَنَّةَ) because of his disobedience?
  • Wasn't Adam under a covenant to obey?
  • Are bani Adam also not under a pledge?

Science on Death
Though scientists know next to nothing about death and what happens thereafter, preliminary data on the state of the brain during moments of death show recordings of brain activity during and several minutes after death. However, more data is needed before the results can be accepted as evidence. As more scientific research emerges, perhaps doctors' understanding of death will change.

And Allah knows best!
