Rape

Those who annoy God and His Apostle - God has cursed them in this World and in the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating Punishment.
And those who annoy believing men and women undeservedly, bear (on themselves) a calumny and a glaring sin.
O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And God is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Truly, if the Hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and those who stir up sedition in the City, desist not, We shall certainly stir thee up against them: Then will they not be able to stay in it as thy neighbours for any length of time:
They shall have a curse on them: whenever they are found, they shall be seized and slain (without mercy).
(Such was) the practice (approved) of God among those who lived aforetime: No change wilt thou find in the practice (approved) of God.
[Al-Quran, Surah al-Ahzaab, Ayaat 57-62, Translation: A. Yusuf Ali

The word al-Ahzaab translates to 'the allies', 'the confederates', 'combined forces', ...

Surah al-Ahzaab is about the Prophet Muhammad  and his companions (رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ) fighting wars against the disbelievers. The aim is to establish the Deen of Allah, that is the Divine Laws, in the Land.

In Allah's Deen, sex is only permitted between legally married man and his wife. A man has to first ratify a covenant with the woman he intends to marry, known as 'Nikah', whereby he undertakes the physical and financial responsibility of his wife and the family that will come through them. Only then can the marriage be consummated.

Allah's Deen does not allow sex with other people. Adultery is a punishable offence. The adulteress and the adulterer are both to be flogged a hundred stripes (Q24:2). The adulterer can only marry an adulteress or a disbeliever, and the adulteress can only marry an adulterer or a disbeliever. The believers (in Allah's Deen) are prohibited from marrying  such a person (Q24:3).

Rape is universally recognised by all humans as a crime, and as a horrible act. It is used as a weapon of torture and triumph by non-believers in Allah's Deen. Throughout human history, women have been raped. Non-believers in Allah's Deen, and the hypocrites among the Believers, have historically, and still want to, 'secularise' family laws to 'liberate' from the strict laws of Allah's Deen.

Therefore, non-believing nations want to eliminate the believers by all means, whether it is through cultural and social corruption, or through armed combat.

Surah al-Ahzaab begins with the guidance to the Prophet  to not to obey the non-believers (ٱلْكَفِرِينَ) and the hypocrites (ٱلْمُنَفِقِينَ) (Q33:1); to follow the guidance as revealed (Q33:2); it reminds the Prophet  of the covenant ratified with the prophets (Q33:7), and then goes on to relate how the truthful stand with the Prophet ﷺ in fighting battles to establish Allah's Deen.

Towards the conclusion of the Surah, we read the above quoted ayaat (Q33:57-62) which are about the  protection of the wives and daughters of the Believers.

And Allah knows best!

Allah's Laws (ٱلدِّينَ) vs The British Legal System: a question for PTI

And they were not commanded except to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakāh. And that is the correct religion.

[Al-Quran 98:5, Translation: Saheeh International]

Those who have been given revelation, which contain Allah's Laws (ٱلدِّينَ)  have been commanded Sincerity to Allah's Laws (ٱلدِّينَ). Q98 begins with the fact that the disbelievers from among the people of the Book, and the polytheists, did not part ways until there came to them clear evidence: Messenger from Allah reciting purified scriptures. ...

Allah's Laws (ٱلدِّينَ) has been spelled out. Individuals and nations have the freedom to choose Allah's Laws (ٱلدِّينَ), or not. There is no compulsion in this world. People can get away disobeying Allah's Laws (ٱلدِّينَ), and may even find legal cover for their violations in the laws they legislate themselves. However, the word دین means law of recompense, so, on the Day of Judgement, we will be recompensed according to Allah's Laws (ٱلدِّينَ)

The same Deen (ٱلدِّينَhas been revealed to all prophets. The Torah, The Injeel, and The Quran, each have their own set of revealed laws (Shariah). Surah al-Maidah (Q5) begins with pilgrimage and dietary laws. Nestled in those beginning ayaat, we find the phrase:

... This day I have perfected for you your religion ...

[Al-Quran 5:3, Translation: Saheeh International]

The Surah reminds the Believers of their covenant which they have ratified with Allah:

And remember the favor of Allāh upon you and His covenant with which He bound you when you said, "We hear and we obey"; and fear Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of that within the breasts.

[Al-Quran 5:7, Translation: Saheeh International]

The very next ayat commands us to stand firm with equitable justice (بِٱلْقِسْطِ):

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allāh, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.

[Al-Quran 5:8, Translation: Saheeh International]

Allah has given the all people of the Book Allah's Laws (ٱلدِّينَ) and Shariah. The Jews, the Christians, and the Muslims, each have the laws mentioned in The Book revealed to their Prophet by Allah. Saving a life is like saving all mankind, and killing a nafs, except for treason or corruption, is like killing all mankind:

Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul1 or for corruption [done] in the land2 - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And Our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.

[Al-Quran 5:32, Translation: Saheeh International]

With that basic principle, begin the laws decreed in Surah al-Maidah: those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, thief: whether male or female; ... , and then to quote from Q5:41 onwards:

O Messenger, let them not grieve you who hasten into disbelief of those who say, "We believe" with their mouths, but their hearts believe not, and from among the Jews. [They are] avid listeners to falsehood, listening to another people who have not come to you.1 They distort words beyond their [proper] places [i.e., usages], saying, "If you are given this,2 take it; but if you are not given it, then beware." But he for whom Allāh intends fitnah3 - never will you possess [power to do] for him a thing against Allāh. Those are the ones for whom Allāh does not intend to purify their hearts. For them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.

[They are] avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of [what is] unlawful. So if they come to you, [O Muḥammad], judge between them or turn away from them. And if you turn away from them - never will they harm you at all. And if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed, Allāh loves those who act justly.

But how is it that they come to you for judgement while they have the Torah, in which is the judgement of Allāh? Then they turn away, [even] after that; but those are not [in fact] believers.

Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allāh] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allāh, and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price [i.e., worldly gain]. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers.

And We ordained for them therein a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds is legal retribution. But whoever gives [up his right as] charity, it is an expiation for him. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed - then it is those who are the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust].

And We sent, following in their footsteps,1 Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirming that which preceded it of the Torah as guidance and instruction for the righteous.

And let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allāh has revealed therein. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed - then it is those who are the defiantly disobedient.

And We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method.1 Had Allāh willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good.2 To Allāh is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

And judge, [O Muḥammad], between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations and beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allāh has revealed to you. And if they turn away - then know that Allāh only intends to afflict them with some of their [own] sins. And indeed, many among the people are defiantly disobedient.

Then is it the judgement of [the time of] ignorance they desire? But who is better than Allāh in judgement for a people who are certain [in faith].

[Al-Quran 5:41-50, Translation: Saheeh International]

In Q5:49, the Prophet has been asked to judge according to what Allah has revealed in The Quran. The last statement in Q5:49 is that most humans are defiantly disobedient.

Muslim is a person who submits to Allah's DEEN (Law). The DEEN has been defined in The Quran in Q9:36, Q12:40, and Q30:30, as follows:

Q9:36 Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves Nafs during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].(translation edited for clarity; in italics)

Q12:40 You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

Q30:30 So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah (separation) of Allah upon which He has created separated [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know. (translation edited for clarity; in italics)

The Legal System & The Legislators in Pakistan

Pakistan was sought for with the slogan:

What is the meaning of Pakistan?

There is no god but Allah.

Pakistan's Constitution states that:

https://pakistani.org/pakistan/constitution/part9.html

Part IX: Islamic Provisions

227 Provisions relating to the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah.

(1) All existing laws shall be brought in conformity with the Injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Holy Quran and Sunnah, in this Part referred to as the Injunctions of Islam, and no law shall be enacted which is repugnant to such Injunctions.

...

While the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees that all laws must be brought in conformity with those revealed by Allah, yet throughout the country's existence as an independent state, Pakistan's Senate and Parliament have repeatedly failed, and floundered, in upholding the DEEN. The political parties, elected by the masses, have generally shown little to no sincerity to the DEEN. The politicians in particular, and the masses in general, have not been true to the slogan.

The job of the elected legislators, Member of National Assembly (MNA) and Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA), is to legislate laws. Whether in opposition or in office, they are required to demonstrate sincerity to the Constitution. In the context of Pakistan, this means demonstrating sincerity to the Laws decreed by Allah, by legislating it into effect, as the Law of the Land.

All political parties, whether religious or secular, have demonstrated no earnest effort to legislate according to Allah's Deen. The judicial system continues to be governed by the pre-independence legal system installed by the British. The legal system is derived from the English common law, which is based on the subject matter heard in previous cases, and thus, the law is created by the judges.

Now, in 2022,  while the country is in political turmoil, and the ousted government is again talking about the State of Medina (ریاست مدینہ), justice (انصاف),  and expressing admiration for the British system of justice; which Laws (دین) are they keen on enacting: Allah's Deen (دین) or the King's Deen (دین)?

While we are required to obey those in power (Q4:59), we are also required to give precedence to Allah and His Messenger in all matters, and to reject any other Deen:

O you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allāh and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allāh and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.

[Al-Quran 4:59, Translation: Saheeh International]

Thus the clear directive:

For you is your religion, and for me is my religion."

Corruption of Creation

Transhumanism - VI: final goals of technology

And if the Truth had followed their desires, verily the heavens and the earth and whosoever is therein had been corrupted. Nay, We have brought them their Reminder, but from their Reminder they now turn away.

[Al-Quran 23:71, Translation: Pickthall]

Q23:71 states that if the truth had followed their desires, everything and everyone would have been corrupted.

Science seeks knowledge to understand the world around, while technology sets out to apply that understanding. Humans have been given the faculties to study, and understand, and apply, and the free will to decide which aims to pursue, and which not to pursue.

The Earth is dotted with the ruins of mighty civilisations bearing witness to the level of technological advancement they had reached.

The scriptures inform us that each mighty civilisation had received its warning from its messengers, and granted ample time to repent and change their ways. When they refused, they were completely annihilated.

So, there is a difference of perspective between scripture-inspired world view, and the atheistic world view.

Technological advances are attempting to make life easy and comfortable in so many ways. In the process, they are changing the original systems and processes. From a secular viewpoint, it is all about evolution, and improving the quality of life, even if in the process much of what's human is eventually sacrificed.

From a scripture-inspired point of view, the world has been created by a Creator, who made everything good. So, any changes in the original systems and processes can only degrade and ruin them. Species are going extinct, the climate is changing for the worse, the modern medical treatments in the past century or so have created more diseases and problems, our immunity is decreased, our food crops are being corrupted through GMO, and so on. All this because humans consider themselves smarter than the Creator who created them, and bestowed all the faculties upon them.

And when we eventually corrupt our own selves, who then will restore us back? We are setting ourselves up for destruction.

Wisdom lies in acknowledging the one and only Creator, not attempting to make any changes in the systems and processes, and realising our role as 'khalifa of the Earth', protecting it from being corrupted.

Entering Islam completely means submitting to Allah's Deen (Laws of Recompense) completely. We need to understand the urgency to immediately adopt Allah's Laws as our State's laws, so that in the limited time that has been granted to us in this life, we are able to make policies which maintain Allah's decreed systems and process, in all spheres of life. Eventually, Allah's Deen will replace all other deens. That has already been decreed.

All the prophets and messengers preached the same Deen, the universal Laws of Recompense. The Quran lists the Deen in three ayaat:

Pakistan Muslim League (N) & The Transgender Bill 2017

The Quran 109

A Muslim is a person who submits to Allah's DEEN (Law).

Legislation belongs to Allah only. He does not share His legislation with anyone. He has declared that there should be no change in His Creation. No word and No act should violate the DEEN.

The Transgender Bill was proposed during Pakistan Muslim League (N) government, and then The Transgender Act was also passed during their government. The Act allows for change in gender, both in official documents (CNIC) and through medical procedure (gender corrective treatment). So, in theory and in practice, the Act provides for violation of the DEEN.

Pakistan's Constitution states that:

https://pakistani.org/pakistan/constitution/part9.html

Part IX: Islamic Provisions

227 Provisions relating to the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah.

(1) All existing laws shall be brought in conformity with the Injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Holy Quran and Sunnah, in this Part referred to as the Injunctions of Islam, and no law shall be enacted which is repugnant to such Injunctions.

...

It was claimed by the Pakistan Muslim League (N) government that the proposed Transgender Bill 2017 was passed by the Senate with the approval of the Islamic Ideology Council of Pakistan. The Express Tribune reported on January 2, 2018 that:

Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Chairman Dr Qibla Ayaz, while speaking to Express Tribune said the name of his body was misused in this context. “This bill was not sent to the CII before being approved by the Senate Functional Committee on HR, but CII’s name was misused for its approval,” the chairman said.

...

The Quran is very clear that Allah creates the humans' gender as He Wills. Reassigning gender based on an individual's personal preference cannot be allowed.

The Quran, Surah al-Hajj ayat 41 states that:

[And they are] those who, if We give them authority in the land, establish prayer and give zakāh and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. And to Allāh belongs the outcome of [all] matters.

— Saheeh International

Those who, if We give them power in the land, establish worship and pay the poor-due and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity. And Allah's is the sequel of events.

— English Translation (Pickthall)

[Q22:41]

Potential Misuse by Homosexuals in Pakistan

Homosexuality is condemned by the Abrahamic faith. Jews, Christians and Muslims all agree on it. Homosexuality is a criminal act, and is punishable by law in Pakistan.

The fact that the Transgender Act 2018 allows for gender selection by the individual opens the path for the law to be misused by homosexuals. It allows for a loophole to legalise an illegal act.

PML (N) and other political parties of Pakistan

The Transgender Bill 2017 was proposed by representatives of almost all political parties of Pakistan, and was passed into the Transgender Act also by representatives of almost all political parties of Pakistan.

Geo News reported on May 8, 2018:

Ratified by the Senate earlier this year, in March, the "Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018" was passed in the Assembly by a majority.

Syed Naveed Qamar of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) — who, on August 8, 2017, piloted the bill to provide protection, relief, and rehabilitation of rights to transgender persons — as well as Senators Rubina Khalid, Farhatullah Babar, and Dr Karim Khwaja have been monumental in this bill's progress.

It was opposed by Naeema Kishwer, of Jamiat Ulema-e Islam - Fazal group (JUI-F), who said it should instead be referred to the standing committee for detailed deliberation. She also moved a motion and amendments to refer the bill to the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) and the standing committee.

Her amendments, however, were rejected.

Most political parties in Pakistan have shown little regard or understanding of the DEEN, and have generally failed to legislate accordingly.

The Quran states:

Q98:5 And they are ordered naught else than to serve Allah, keeping religion pure for Him, as men by nature upright, and to establish worship and to pay the poor-due. That is true religion.

The word مُخْلِصِينَ translates to sincerely,  لَهُ for HIS (Allah's), ٱلدِّينَ  Laws.

Pakistan's Senate and Parliament have repeatedly failed, and floundered, in upholding the DEEN. This is just one example. The political parties, elected by the masses, have generally shown little to no sincerity to the DEEN. The politicians in particular, and the masses in general, have not been true to the slogan:

What is the meaning of Pakistan?

There is no god but Allah.

Pakistan & Other Countries

Self-perceived gender identity is a major goal of transgender rights movements globally. All over the world, there are efforts going on to legalise it, and remove all barriers in the way.

According to a report in Al-Jazeera on May 9, 2018

Amnesty International’s Pakistan researcher Rabia Mehmood praised the move.

“This bill makes Pakistan one of the few countries in the world to recognise the self-perceived gender identity of transgender individuals,” Mehmood said.

This is the beginning of the End.

Consequences

The DEEN (Law) must be upheld, otherwise there will be legal consequences.

Historically, The Torah and The Quran narrate the fate of the people of Lut alaihisalam, when they refused to give up their corrupt practices. From my reading, it seems that they had legislated for it, and thus considered it legal to do as they wished. After fair warnings and preaching, they eventually suffered Divine Punishment.

The Bible foretells that end times will be like the Days of Lot and like the Days of Noah. The Hour (السَّاعَةَ) is the promised time of the terrible earthquake when this world will end, and the world of eternal consequences will begin.

That  is for the disbelieving nations.

What about the believing nations?

The history of the Bani Israel is especially instructive, in that they were the chosen people, entrusted with  upholding The Torah, and so they suffered destruction and exile twice in their history, due to their corruption. They were invaded, massacred, their masjid and their houses destroyed, and those left alive were exiled and made slaves.

Pakistan was prayed for as an ideal Muslim State where we would be free to practice Islam. Allah granted us an independent Muslim State. We need to worry about our fate, as regards our negligence of The DEEN.

Ignorance of The Law (DEEN) is no excuse. Believers, leaders and masses alike, must study The Quran, and live by it, not against it, lest they be 'booked' under the divine 'law'. The Believers are under a ratified covenant. It must be upheld.

as-Salaat vs Yoga

Yoga, primarily practiced in South Asian polytheistic traditions, has grown in popularity globally. Many persons from the Abrahamic faith also perform yoga as a form of exercise. There are varying opinions whether it is permissible or not. The following is a comparison between the as-Salaat (the Abrahamic form of prayer) and yoga:

1: Contact

as-Salaat (contact prayers) is the Abrahamic form of establishing regular contact with Allah, the only God.

Yoga (yug or yuj (unite or yoke)) is the polytheistic form of establishing contact with their deities. The root of the word is found in a hymn to the rising sun-god in Rigveda 5.81.1

2: Movements & Poses

as-Salaat comprises of physical movements and poses of submission to Allah, the only God.

Yoga comprises of physical movements and poses for submission to their deities. Though modern yoga poses are claimed to be secular, ancient seals discovered from the ruins of Indus Valley Civilisation depict yoga poses.

3: Words

as-Salaat (for Muslims) comprises of Arabic words of guidance from al-Quran and words celebrating the perfection of Allah, the only God. Jews and Christians also have their form of as-Salaat including words from their scriptures.

Yoga comprises of Sanskrit words (mantra) of devotion to their deities, introduced by the practitioners, and the guiding philosophy for life.

4: Number of Times

as-Salaat is enjoined five times a day upon Muslims, upon Jews thrice, and Christians identify seven prayer times from their scriptures.

Yoga  ...

5: Timings

as-Salaat is to be established from the decline of the Sun (afternoon) till Fajr (dawn prayers), that is, till before sunrise.

Yoga (modern) includes surya namaskar poses, whose time follows the Sun cycle across the sky; great importance is attached especially to sunrise and sunset.

6: Protection

as-Salaat is to seek Allah's protection from evil

Yoga poses aim to channel the serpentine energy from the root, through the chakras, to eventually open the third eye

7: Eternal

as-Salaat is a most important ritual for the remembrance of Allah. The compensation of the successful nafs (soul) in the Hereafter will be its permanent reinstallation in its body on the Day of Judgement. Those who lose their nafs (soul) on that Day will suffer the most profound loss.

Yoga is about eternal liberation of the soul from its body.

Understanding Q2:256 (No compulsion in Deen)

DRAFT

Kufr, Fusuq, Isyaan, Ghaiy, || Rushd, Islam & Iman: what they mean in the context of Allah's Deen

And when My servants question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright.

[Al-Quran 2:186, Translation: Pickthall]

Allah responds immediately. Allah is asking us to also listen to Him, trust His Guidance (The Quran), may be, then, we will have sound judgement, the ability to make legally right choices and decisions (see Rushd below).

There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower.

[Al-Quran 2:256, Translation: Pickthall]

There is no compulsion in the Deen (Law of Recompense). The legally correct has been made distinct from the legally wrong. On the Day of Deen, Allah, The Owner of the Day of Deen, will judge according to His Deen.

Allah's Deen has been spelled out. Individuals and nations have the freedom to choose Allah's Deen, or not. There is no compulsion in this world. People can get away disobeying Allah's Deen, and may even find legal cover for their violations in the laws they legislate themselves. However, the word Deen means law of recompense, so, on the Day of Judgement, we will be recompensed according to Allah's Deen.

The same Deen has been revealed to all prophets. The Torah, The Injeel, and The Quran, each have their own set of revealed laws (Shariah). In Q5:49, the Prophet ﷺ has been asked to judge according to what Allah has revealed in The Quran. The last statement in Q5:49 is that most humans are defiantly disobedient. The next ayat then questions:

Is it a judgment of the time of (pagan) ignorance that they are seeking? Who is better than Allah for judgment to a people who have certainty (in their belief)?

[Al-Quran 5:50, Translation: Pickthall]

...

Surah al-Hujarat (The Private Apartments) is the forty ninth surah in The Quran. It contains eighteen ayaat. The surah uses all the words in the subtitle of this post except 'ghaiy'. In ayat 16, it questions:
So, when using the following terms in the context of Allah's Deen:

Kufr means to outright reject Allah's Deen,

for example:

  • those who do not judge according to Allah's Book (Q....  )
  • People of the Book reject Allah's ayaat (Q3:98)

...

Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did Allah intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient,

Who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined and cause corruption on earth. It is those who are the losers.

How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.

[Al-Quran 2:26-28, Translation: Saheeh International]

Fusuq means to defiantly disobey

for example:

  • the Fasiq (defiantly disobedient) do Kufr (reject Allah's Book)  (Q2:99)
  • many People of the Book are Fasiq (defiantly disobedient) (Q3:110)
  • the Fasiq (defiantly disobedient) do not judge by what Allah has revealed (Q5:47)
  • most among humans are Fasiq (defiantly disobedient) (Q5:49)

Isyaan means disobedience

for example:

  • Adam disobeyed his Lord, ... (Q20:121)

Ghaiy means to make a legal error

for example:

  • Iblis blames Allah for making him err (Q7:16, Q15:39)
  • Iblis promises to make humans err (Q38:82)
  • Adam عليه السلام disobeyed his Lord, so he erred (Q20:121)
  • Noah عليه السلام said that his advice will not help if Allah wants to let them err (Q11:34)
  • Moses عليه السلام said to the man who kept picking fights, and calling for help, that he was clearly in error (Q28:18)
  • Muhammad ﷺ has neither strayed, nor erred (Q53:2)

....

Rushd means legally right conduct / sound judgement

for example:

  • there is no compulsion in the Deen (Law of recompense): sound judgement has been made distinct from ghaiy (Q2:256)
  • when orphans reach maturity, and have sound judgement, hand over their wealth to them (Q4:6)
  • the young men prayed for sound judgement in their affair (Q18:10)
  • whoever Allah misguides, he can have no murshid (rightly-guiding friend) (Q18:17)
  • when intending to do something in future, say in sha Allah; if you forget to say 'in sha Allah', then when you remember, say that maybe my Lord will guide me to what is closer than this to rashada (legally right statement)
  • Moses requested to be allowed to follow the servant of Allah, so as to learn Rushd from him (Q18:66)
    • the boat was damaged so the hardworking people could continue earning their living, as all the good boats were being seized by a king
    • the child (who would grow up to be evil) was killed before he could cause grief to his righteous parents in their elderly years,  with the hope that Allah will replace him with a better person
    • the wall was rebuilt, in the arrogant neighbourhood, to protect the wealth of orphans till they were old enough, as a Mercy from Allah, because their father was a righteous man
  • we gave Abraham sound judgement (Q21:51)

Islam means submission to Allah's Deen

for example:

  • Allah commanded Abraham to submit (...), so he submitted (...) (Q2:131)
  • ask the people of the Book and the people of Makkah, do you submit (Q3:20)

....

Iman means to believe in Allah, and the Judgement of the Last Day (the resurrection and the accountability)

for example:

  • Allah asked Abraham if he didn't believe, when he requested to be shown how Allah gives life after death (Q2:260)

Financial Guidance in Surah al-Baqarah

 ...

The Quran begins with the prayer for guidance (Surah al-Fateha). Believers recite it daily in every contact prayer (الصَّلَاةَ). Immediately after Surah al-Fateha is Surah al-Baqarah, which begins with the statement that it is a guidance for the mutaqqin ( لِلْمُتَّقِينَ). The mutaqqin are those who ward off /protect themselves from something harmful, i.e. they are conscious of their duty to Allah, and therefore they strive to keep their duty to Allah, so that He saves them from The Fire of Hell. Among the salient characteristics of the mutaqqin is that they spend (يُنْفِقُونَ) from what they have been given.

Surah al-Baqarah is the longest surah in The Quran consisting of 40 ruku, which contain a total of 286 ayaat. It begins with the idea of spending, mentions spending in context across the surah, and then towards the end dedicates five ruku on financial matters: three on infaq, one on riba, and one on how to contract debts.

To learn the financial guidance in Surah al-Baqarah, the following is a study of the key words (Debt) ) across the surah.

(Spend)

Search result for trilateral root nūn fā qāf (ن ف ق) : https://corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=nfq#(2:3:8). Notice that spending and hypocrisy share the same root words, and are opposed to each other. The Believer spends, while the hypocrite withholds. Some key learnings with ayat number:

Q2:3 the mutaqqin spend from what We have provided them

Q2:195 spend in the cause of Allah (context fighting to establish Deen)

Q2:215 they ask what they should spend: say that which you spend of good (مَا أَنْفَقْتُمْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ) should go to: parents, near kindred / those close to you, orphans, needy, and the wayfarer.

Q2:219 they ask what they should spend: say, whatever is superfluous / left after meeting your needs

Q2:254 O ye who believe! spend of that wherewith We have provided you ere a day come when there will be no trafficking, nor friendship, nor intercession. The disbelievers, they are the wrong-doers (This ayat precedes the famous Ayat-ul-Kursi)

The three ruku on spending (35-37) begin from ayat 261 through 273 of Surah al-Baqarah (translation: Pickthall:

2:261  The likeness of those who spend their wealth in Allah's way is as the likeness of a grain which groweth seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains. Allah giveth increase manifold to whom He will. Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing

2:262  Those who spend their wealth for the cause of Allah and afterward make not reproach and injury to follow that which they have spent; their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them, neither shall they grieve

2:263  A kind word with forgiveness is better than almsgiving followed by injury. Allah is Absolute, Clement

2:264  O ye who believe! Render not vain your almsgiving by reproach and injury, like him who spendeth his wealth only to be seen of men and believeth not in Allah and the Last Day. His likeness is as the likeness of a rock whereon is dust of earth; a rainstorm smiteth it, leaving it smooth and bare. They have no control of aught of that which they have gained. Allah guideth not the disbelieving folk

2:265  And the likeness of those who spend their wealth in search of Allah's pleasure, and for the strengthening of their souls, is as the likeness of a garden on a height. The rainstorm smiteth it and it bringeth forth its fruit twofold. And if the rainstorm smite it not, then the shower. Allah is Seer of what ye do

2:266  Would any of you like to have a garden of palm-trees and vines, with rivers flowing underneath it, with all kinds of fruit for him therein; and old age hath stricken him and he hath feeble offspring; and a fiery whirlwind striketh it and it is (all) consumed by fire. Thus Allah maketh plain His revelations unto you, in order that ye may give thought

2:267  O ye who believe! Spend of the good things which ye have earned, and of that which We bring forth from the earth for you, and seek not the bad (with intent) to spend thereof (in charity) when ye would not take it for yourselves save with disdain; and know that Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise

2:268  The devil promiseth you destitution and enjoineth on you lewdness. But Allah promiseth you forgiveness from Himself with bounty. Allah is All-Embracing, All-knowing

2:269  He giveth wisdom unto whom He will, and he unto whom wisdom is given, he truly hath received abundant good. But none remember except men of understanding

2:270  Whatever alms ye spend or vow ye vow, lo! Allah knoweth it. Wrong-doers have no helpers

2:271  If ye publish your almsgiving, it is well, but if ye hide it and give it to the poor, it will be better for you, and will atone for some of your ill-deeds. Allah is Informed of what ye do

2:272  The guiding of them is not thy duty (O Muhammad), but Allah guideth whom He will. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, it is for yourselves, when ye spend not save in search of Allah's Countenance; and whatsoever good thing ye spend, it will be repaid to you in full, and ye will not be wronged

2:273  (Alms are) for the poor who are straitened for the cause of Allah, who cannot travel in the land (for trade). The unthinking man accounteth them wealthy because of their restraint. Thou shalt know them by their mark: They do not beg of men with importunity. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, lo! Allah knoweth it

(Wealth)

Search result for trilateral root nūn mīm wāw lām (م و ل) : https://corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=mwl#(2:177:20) Some key learning with ayat number:

Q2:155 we will definitely be tested in our wealth, among other things

Q2:177 attaining birr (state of pristine purity) involves spending wealth, in spite of love for it, on 'those the near relatives, and the orphans, and the needy, and (of) the wayfarer, and those who ask, and in freeing the necks (slaves)' ... 'pay zakat', ...

Q2:188 last ayat of the ruku on fasting commands that one should not eat up one's own wealth vainly, nor use it to bribe authorities so as to consume others' wealth sinfully

Q2:247 when Allah appointed Talut (Saul) as their King, the Bani Israel debated his appointment, as he had less wealth than them. Their Prophet informed them that Allah chooses whom He Wills, and had increased him in knowledge and physique.

Q2:261 the first ayat of the three ruku on spending describes spending in Allah's way through the example of a grain which grows seven ears of grain, each with one hundred grains, Allah giving manifold increase to whom He Wills (as reward in the Hereafter)

Q2:262 this manifold reward comes with the pre and post clauses

  • they spend for the cause of Allah
  • they do not follow their spending with reminders of their generosity, nor with taunts, insults, harm, injury

Q2:264 clearly warns against rendering charity spending void by reminders and injury

Q2:265 presents the example of those who spend to please Allah, and to strengthen their nafs, is like a garden on a height, which does well whether it is struck by heavy rainstorms, or receives just light showers

Q2:274 those who spend from their wealth, night and day, secretly and openly, their reward is with their Lord, and they will neither fear nor grieve (on the Day of Recompense)

Q2:279 warning from Allah and His Messenger of War against those who consume Riba: leave Riba and you can keep your principal amount, neither wronging nor being wronged

(Zakat  (tax))

Search result for trilateral root zāy kāf wāw (ز ك و) : https://corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=zkw#(2:177:35) Though generally translated in terms of purity, it actually means increase or growth, as made clear in Q9:103

Purity is associated with the body, while growth is associated with the Nafs. A bit on it at the bottom of a prior post: The Same Religion (الدِّينِ)

Q2:43 after narrating the story of Adam (Q2:30-39), Q2:40 onwards addresses the Bani Israel, ... ; Q2:43 also exhorts them to establish worship, pay zakat, and bow with those who bow.

Q2:83 the covenant with Bani Israel, which included the payment of zakat

Q2:110 the believers are being commanded to: establish prayer, pay zakat, and they are being assured that whatever good they send on for their nafs, they will find it with Allah. He beholds everything they do.

Q2:129 Abraham's prayer that Allah raise a messenger from among them (people of Makkah) who would 'shall recite unto them Thy revelations, and shall instruct them in the Scripture and in wisdom and shall make them grow.'. ...

Q2:151 the ayat just before ends with '... Fear them not, but fear Me! - and so that I may complete My grace upon you, and that ye may be guided', and then Q2:151 reads: 'Even as We have sent unto you a messenger from among you, who reciteth unto you Our revelations and causeth you to grow, and teacheth you the Scripture and wisdom, and teacheth you that which ye knew not.'

Q2:174 the ayaat just before instruct to eat from the good things Allah has provided, and to render thanks (by sharing?), and list the only four things that Allah has prohibited from eating; and then Q2:174 reads: 'Lo! those who hide aught of the Scripture which Allah hath revealed and purchase a small gain therewith, they eat into their bellies nothing else than fire. Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He make them grow. Theirs will be a painful doom.'

Q2:177 lists the beliefs and actions that help attain birr (state of pristine purity): among them is spending wealth on 'those the near relatives, and the orphans, and the needy, and (of) the wayfarer, and those who ask, and in freeing the necks (slaves)', establishing prayer, and the payment of zakat

Q2:232 there is greater purity and growth for couples to choose to remain married when they complete the waiting period of their intention to divorce, and so they should not be prevented if they make this choice

Q2:277 the ayat just before is about usury not growing with Allah; then Q2:277 gives glad tidings to those who believe, do acts of reform, establish prayer, and pay zakat, that their reward is with their Lord, and on them shall be neither fear nor grief (on the Day of Judgement)

(Riba (usury / interest))

Search result for trilateral root rā bā wāw (ر ب و) : https://corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=rbw#(2:275:3)  Notice that the root also implies increase, swelling up, exceed, ...we can observe it in the use of the root  (ر ب و) twice in Q2:276 (ٱلرِّبَوٰا۟  ||  يُرْبِى):

Riba is essentially a flow of wealth from the poor to the rich. The last ayat of the third ruku on spending explains that spending is for the poor who don't beg. Then, the ruku on Riba (38) begins from ayat 274 through 281of Surah al-Baqarah:

2:273  (Alms are) for the poor who are straitened for the cause of Allah, who cannot travel in the land (for trade). The unthinking man accounteth them wealthy because of their restraint. Thou shalt know them by their mark: They do not beg of men with importunity. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, lo! Allah knoweth it

2:274  Those who spend their wealth by night and day, by stealth and openly, verily their reward is with their Lord, and their shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve

2:275  Those who swallow usury cannot rise up save as he ariseth whom the devil hath prostrated by (his) touch. That is because they say: Trade is just like usury; whereas Allah permitteth trading and forbiddeth usury. He unto whom an admonition from his Lord cometh, and (he) refraineth (in obedience thereto), he shall keep (the profits of) that which is past, and his affair (henceforth) is with Allah. As for him who returneth (to usury) - Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein

2:276  Allah hath blighted usury and made almsgiving fruitful. Allah loveth not the impious and guilty

2:277  Lo! those who believe and do good works and establish worship and pay the poor-due, their reward is with their Lord and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve

2:278  O ye who believe! Observe your duty to Allah, and give up what remaineth (due to you) from usury, if ye are (in truth) believers

2:279  And if ye do not, then be warned of war (against you) from Allah and His messenger. And if ye repent, then ye have your principal (without interest). Wrong not, and ye shall not be wronged

2:280  And if the debtor is in straitened circumstances, then (let there be) postponement to (the time of) ease; and that ye remit the debt as almsgiving would be better for you if ye did but know

2:281  And guard yourselves against a day in which ye will be brought back to Allah. Then every soul will be paid in full that which it hath earned, and they will not be wronged

---

Usury makes the rich richer, and increases poverty in general. Spending on the poor improves their purchasing power, which benefits the economy as a whole. Muslims need to not only spend on the poor, but also give up usury, both on the personal and on the national level. Ideally, the interest-based banking system should be done away with, and replaced with the financial system decreed by Allah. We have to begin somewhere: an alternate solution to avoid interest-based loans in: A Muslim Financial System

(Debt)

Search result for trilateral root dāl yā nūn (د ي ن) : https://corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=dyn#(2:282:6). Notice that Deen (دِين) and Dayn (دَيْن) share the same root words. We believe that on the Day of Deen we will be recompensed for all that we spend in this world. After providing guidance for spending and the warnings against usury, ruku 39 instructs us regarding contracting debt. It consists of only two ayaat: 282 and 283 of Surah al-Baqarah. Ayat 282 is the longest ayat in The Quran:

2:282  O ye who believe! When ye contract a debt for a fixed term, record it in writing. Let a scribe record it in writing between you in (terms of) equity. No scribe should refuse to write as Allah hath taught him, so let him write, and let him who incurreth the debt dictate, and let him observe his duty to Allah his Lord, and diminish naught thereof. But if he who oweth the debt is of low understanding, or weak, or unable himself to dictate, then let the guardian of his interests dictate in (terms of) equity. And call to witness, from among your men, two witnesses. And if two men be not (at hand) then a man and two women, of such as ye approve as witnesses, so that if the one erreth (through forgetfulness) the other will remember. And the witnesses must not refuse when they are summoned. Be not averse to writing down (the contract) whether it be small or great, with (record of) the term thereof. That is more equitable in the sight of Allah and more sure for testimony, and the best way of avoiding doubt between you; save only in the case when it is actual merchandise which ye transfer among yourselves from hand to hand. In that case it is no sin for you if ye write it not. And have witnesses when ye sell one to another, and let no harm be done to scribe or witness. If ye do (harm to them) lo! it is a sin in you. Observe your duty to Allah. Allah is teaching you. And Allah is knower of all things

2:283  If ye be on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a pledge in hand (shall suffice). And if one of you entrusteth to another let him who is trusted deliver up that which is entrusted to him (according to the pact between them) and let him observe his duty to Allah his Lord. Hide not testimony. He who hideth it, verily his heart is sinful. Allah is Aware of what ye do

---

Earlier on in Surah al-Baqarah, we read about when Allah informed the angels that He was going to appoint a Khalifa for the Earth. The ayaat (Q2:230-239) briefly recount Adam's appointment and fall, and that Allah promises to send guidance, and whoever follows the guidance will neither fear nor grieve.

In The Quran, Surah Ta Ha, we learn that Adam was under a covenant, so even though Iblis seduced both Adam and his wife, yet the blame of Adam's disobedience is placed on him. The Torah delves into the Genesis story in greater detail, and mentions how the serpent managed to make Adam's wife go astray. It seems that females are biologically more vulnerable, more prone to being led astray, and thus the directive to take two female witnesses in debt contracts in lieu of one male witness. For more on it, please read: Female recall. It seems that Allah compensates women's weakness by reducing their responsibility, allowing for two women to share the burden of testimony. Debts are too serious a matter, and it is crucial that justice is done.
We have an appointment with Allah. The Day is called يَوْمِ الدِّينِ (Q1:4). We know from other ayaat of The Quran that everything we say and do is being recorded by honourable writers (Q82:11). Allah is teaching us how to maintain a proper record of whatever is owed to anyone, as well as what to do in exceptional situations when writing down the debt contract is not possible.
