The Case for The Lunar Calendar

 Surah at-Taubah 

36

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِندَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ ذَ‌ٰلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ ۚ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ وَقَاتِلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ كَافَّةً كَمَا يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ كَافَّةً ۚ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُتَّقِينَ

37

إِنَّمَا النَّسِيءُ زِيَادَةٌ فِي الْكُفْرِ ۖ يُضَلُّ بِهِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُحِلُّونَهُ عَامًا وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُ عَامًا لِّيُوَاطِئُوا عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ فَيُحِلُّوا مَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ ۚ زُيِّنَ لَهُمْ سُوءُ أَعْمَالِهِمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْكَافِرِين
Translation: Saheeh International 

36. Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].

37. Indeed, the postponing [of restriction within sacred months] is an increase in disbelief by which those who have disbelieved are led [further] astray. They make it lawful one year and unlawful another year to correspond to the number made unlawful by Allah and [thus] make lawful what Allah has made unlawful. Made pleasing to them is the evil of their deeds; and Allah does not guide the disbelieving people

According to the scriptures: 
Allah is The Creator of the heavens and the earth. 
Allah is The Creator of the sun and the moon. 
The Sun and the Moon were created after the creation of the Heavens and the Earth. 

Allah is The Creator of all humans, and all other creatures. 
Allah is the Owner of sovereignty, and grants it to whom He wills. 
Allah appointed khilafat of the Earth to Adam and David. 
Allah demands sincerity in religion from the Believers. 
The Quran, Surah at-Taubah, ayat 36, defines The Deen as twelve months, of which four are sacred… 
Four months of the Lunar Calendar have been known to be sacred since ancient times, probably since Prophet Abraham alaihisalam announced the pilgrimage to the Kaaba. 

Kings decree calendars, and governments announce holidays. The world has observed many calendar systems (solar, lunisolar, lunar) with many intercalations and adjustments, for religious and practical reasons. As nobody really understands the fundamental nature of time, thus it’s not possible to reach the right calendar through reason alone. 

For countries governed by Muslims, the sincerity in religion clause naturally requires that they follow the lunar calendar, without any intercalations or adjustments. 


Hadith-e-Nabwi ﷺ  

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "the Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the west: and when the people see it, then whoever will be living on the surface of the earth will have faith, and that is (the time) when no good will it do to a soul to believe then, if it believed not before." (6.158)  (Book #60, Hadith #159)


When the Sun rises from the West, the solar calendar will no longer be reliable. There is emerging scientific evidence for such a phenomenon to have happened before. For more in it, please read: When the Sun rose from the West. 

It is interesting to note that the correct Deen as regards the calendar is mentioned in Surah at-Taubah, as that is when Makkah was to be secured, and the Deen of Islam was to be established by a Muslim government. 

We look forward to The Days of Allah when Allah’s Deen will be established over all the other deens, and the entire world will then follow the same calendar, in sha Allah.
