Nur vs Zulm

...

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become distinct from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in ṭāghūt and believes in Allāh has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

Allāh is the Ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light Nur. And those who disbelieve - their allies are ṭāghūt. They take them out of the light Nur into darknesses. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.

[Al-Quran 2:256-257, Translation: Saheeh International, edited in italics for clarity]

On the individual, there is no compulsion in religion (Deen). Those who believe in Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى , He takes them out from darknesses (الظُّلُمٰتِ) to the Nur (النُّوۡرِ), a special kind of radiation.

We know from Adam's prayer that they had put their Nafs in darkness by obeying Satan and eating from the forbidden tree:

They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged darkened ourselves Nafs, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

[Al-Quran 7:23, Translation: Saheeh International, edited in italics for clarity]

Though the word ظَلَمۡنَاۤ is generally translated as 'we have wronged', it shares the trilateral root with الظُّلُمٰتِ (Q2:257), and a clearer translation should be 'we have darkened'.

later on in Surah al-Araf, we also read that:

And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves their Nafs, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord Sustainer?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware." Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allāh before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?" And thus do We [explain in] detail the verses, and perhaps they will return.

[Al-Quran 7:172-174, Translation: Saheeh International, edited in italics for clarity]

All descendants of Adam's sons have been made witness over their Nafs, that Allah is their Lord Sustainer.

In Surah Al-Nur, we read that Allah is the Nur (Q24:35) of the skies and earth, and five ayaat later, we read that He grants Nur to whom He Wills:

Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allāh has not granted light Nur - for him there is no light Nur.

[Al-Quran 24:40, Translation: Saheeh International, edited in italics for clarity]

Sun is a light that has been worshipped by many people across history, and even in the present day. Secular science also presents the Sun as the source of all life on Earth. The creation narrative of polytheistic beliefs finds many overlaps with secular science.

In Surah anNaml, we read about the Sun-worshipping people of Saba who were ruled by a Queen. When Prophet-King Solomon (Sulaiman عليه السلام) hears about it, he commands her to come in submission to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى‎ ... Finally, when she submits and comes to the Kingdom of Prophet-King Solomon (Sulaiman عليه السلام), she realises that she had been putting her Nafs in darkness by worshipping the Sun, and submits to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى along with Prophet-King Solomon (Sulaiman عليه السلام):

So when she arrived, it was said [to her], "Is your throne like this?" She said, "[It is] as though it was it." [Solomon said], "And we were given knowledge before her, and we have been Muslims [in submission to Allāh]. And that which she was worshipping other than Allāh had averted her [from submission to Him]. Indeed, she was from a disbelieving people." She was told, "Enter the palace." But when she saw it, she thought it was a body of water and uncovered her shins [to wade through]. He said, "Indeed, it is a palace [whose floor is] made smooth with glass." She said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself Nafs, and I submit with Solomon to Allāh, Lord of the worlds."

[Al-Quran 27:42-44, Translation: Saheeh International, edited in italics for clarity]

Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى 's Deen is to be established as the law of the land, globally. More on this at: Act(s) of Reform (عَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ and عَمِلَ صَالِحًا)

On the individual level, each Nafs is in pledge. Those who sincerely accept the Deen of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى , establishing prayer and giving zakat, are promised the restoration of their Nur. In Surah alHadeed (Q57) and Surah atTahreem (Q66), we read:

On the Day you see the believing men and believing women, their light Nur proceeding before them and on their right, [it will be said], "Your good tidings today are [of] gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein you will abide eternally." That is what is the great attainment.

On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, "Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light Nur." It will be said, "Go back behind you and seek light Nur." And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment.

They [i.e., the hypocrites] will call to them [i.e., the believers], "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you afflicted yourselves nafs and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allāh. And the Deceiver [i.e., Satan] deceived you concerning Allāh.

So today no ransom will be taken from you or from those who disbelieved. Your refuge is the Fire. It is most worthy of you, and wretched is the destination."

[Al-Quran 57:12-15, Translation: Saheeh International, edited in italics for clarity]

Also, in Surah at-Tahreem, we read:

O you who have believed, repent to Allāh with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allāh will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light Nur will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light Nur and forgive cover us. Indeed, You are over all things competent."

[Al-Quran 66:8, Translation: Saheeh International, edited in italics for clarity]

May Allah grant us Nur of guidance in this life so we can see guidance, accept it, and act upon it, and perfect our Nur for us on the Day of Resurrection, allowing us to dwell in His Gardens forever, with a Nafs that has been restored to its pristine state.

Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief] until there came to them clear evidence A Messenger from Allāh, reciting purified scriptures Within which are correct writings [i.e., rulings and laws]. Nor did those who were given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear evidence.

And they were not commanded except to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakāh. And that is the correct religion.

Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.

Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds - those are the best of creatures. Their reward with their Lord will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allāh being pleased with them and they with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord.

[Al-Quran 98, Translation: Saheeh International]

Surah alBayyinah (The Clear Evidence) focuses on the Deen-e-Qayyimah (The Standing Religion || The Law of Recompense) stating that those who are sincere to the Deen are the best of creatures, while those who reject are the worst of creatures.

Now considering that we humans, descendants of Adam, were appointed Khalifa (Q2:30) and, Adam was especially made by Allah  with His Own Hands (Q38:75 || Q12:111) . Imagine, how wonderful and powerful would be that whom Allah ﷻ  created especially to rule over all creatures of the Earth

We also know that Adam and his wife harmed their Nafs when they disobeyed and ate from the forbidden tree (Q7:23). Literally, they darkened their Nafs: put out its light.

Furthermore, Surah atTeen informs us that we humans were made in the best of moulds (Q95:4), and then reduced to the lowest of the low (Q95:5).

Allah  also promises to restore (Q89:27-30) and reform (Q57:12-13 || Q65:11 || Q66:8) the Nafs of the believers who do good deeds (Q20:14-15 || Q40:7-9 || Q53:31-32), morally reforming their own selves and those around them.

Once restored, the companions of the Gardens will have superpowers, a radiant Nafs that emits Nur.

The companions of the Fire will lose their Nafs forever (Q39:15), suffering perpetually.

Humans imagine people with extraordinary powers: some characters are superheroes, while others are monsters. I think there is food for thought in these ideas, to think about why sincerity in Deen is essential for becoming the best of creatures (خَيۡرُ الۡبَرِيَّةِ).

About those who fought along with the Prophet Muhammad  to establish Allah ﷻ 's Deen, we read:

O Prophet, sufficient for you is Allāh and for whoever follows you of the believers. O Prophet, urge the believers to battle. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are steadfast], they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand. Now, Allāh has lightened [the hardship] for you, and He knows that among you is weakness. So if there are from you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you a thousand, they will overcome two thousand by permission of Allāh. And Allāh is with the steadfast.

...

But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal." And he swore [by Allāh] to them, "Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors." So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, "Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?" They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged darkened ourselves nafs, and if You do not forgive cover us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

[Al-Quran 7:20-23, Translation: Saheeh International, edited in italics]

Literally translated, Adam and his wife said to their Sustainer (رَبَّنَا) that:

  1. they had darkened their nafs (ظَلَمۡنَاۤ اَنۡفُسَنَا
  2. and if He did not cover them
  3. and have mercy upon them (وَتَرۡحَمۡنَا) *
  4. they would surely be among those who suffer loss

* the word (تَرۡحَمۡنَا) shares the same root (ر ح م) as the womb, so I think it implies an encompassing, affectionate covering, to protect their nafs from further harm, so that they do not lose it completely

In the ayaat quoted above, Satan is tempting them with the promise of transforming into angels (from bashr to malak), and/or immortality. In Surah Ta Ha, we read the temptation in the following words:

Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed. And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun." Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?" And they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred. Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him]. [Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise] - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter]. And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind."

[Al-Quran 20:118-124, Translation: Saheeh International]

Comparing 7:20 and 20:120

  • Immortality (الۡخٰلِدِيۡنَ‏) matches to the Tree of Eternity (شَجَرَةِ الۡخُلۡدِ
  • Angels (مَلَـكَيۡنِ) matches to possession or kingdom that will not deteriorate (مُلۡكٍ لَّا يَبۡلٰى‏

Adam was a bashr, not a malak (angel). Q21:34 is quite clear that no bashr (بَشَرٍ) has been granted immortality (الۡخُـلۡدَ). So, in pursuit of eternal life or immortality, the other way around was to try to become angels. The quality that is mentioned in lieu of becoming angels is a kingdom that will not deteriorate That implies that

  1. Adam had a nafs that was not in the dark /not darkened, so it was emitting light or reflecting light
  2. his possession / kingdom was prone to or in a state of  decay

We know that radioactive elements emit radiation as well as decay. If radioactivity stops, the isotope becomes stable and stops radiating. Imagine a human who had his/her own internal source of nuclear energy to energise, a radioactive core, and it almost stopped when they tried to change their nafs.  After all, humans were created in the best of forms, yet reduced to the lowest of the low (Q95).

Moreover, in Surah Hadeed, we read:

On the Day you see the believing men and believing women, their light proceeding before them and on their right, [it will be said], "Your good tidings today are [of] gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein you will abide eternally." That is what is the great attainment.

On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, "Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light." It will be said, "Go back behind you and seek light." And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment.

[Al-Quran 57:12-15, Translation: Saheeh International]

Also, in Surah at-Tahreem, we read:

O you who have believed, repent to Allāh with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allāh will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive cover us. Indeed, You are over all things competent."

[Al-Quran 66:8, Translation: Saheeh International, edited in italics]

After all, this life to act out, and its consequent reckoning has been created to reward every Nafs for what it earns. Surah Ta Ha quotes what Allah

Indeed, I am Allāh. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance. Indeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it - so that every soul (Nafs) may be recompensed according to that for which it strives. So do not let one avert you from it who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.

Teleology: A purpose-built Universe?

The Natural Clothing

It will be well worth to look into radioactivity, on Earth, and in Space, to get a fresh perspective on the literal reading of The Quran, so that we truly begin to understand what is being said, in sha Allah, truly submitting sincerely.
