Adding Insult to Injury

...

Joseph (12:77)

They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them.[1] He said, "You are worse in position, and Allāh is most knowing of what you describe."

— Saheeh International

[1]- He did not answer that he himself had been stolen by them from his father.

They said: If he stealeth, a brother of his stole before. But Joseph kept it secret in his soul and revealed it not unto them. He said (within himself): Ye are in worse case, and Allah knoweth best (the truth of) that which ye allege.

— M. Pickthall

Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) was an excellent servant of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى , a prophet, and appointed over the stores of Egypt, as a trustworthy minister of the King of Egypt.

His elder brothers had earlier been cruel to him, and abandoned him in a dry well, when he was young.

As Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is predominant over His Decisions, He elevated Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) from a slave in Egypt to the Minister in charge of the Food Stores of Egypt.

His brothers did not know that.

They came begging for food during the years of famine.

He was kind and generous to them.

Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام)'s elder brothers were sons of Jacob (Yaqub  عليه السلام), but their mother was different.

Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) had a younger brother, son of his father and mother.

So, when the brothers came to Egypt for food, Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) was able to take his younger brother from them. He pre-informed his younger brother that he was his lost elder brother, and to not to grieve over what their elder brothers have been doing (Q12:69). Then, something was deliberately hid in the younger brother's luggage, so as to be able to take him from his brothers, and keep him in Egypt. This was a plan inspired to Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام), as otherwise he had no right to keep his younger brother back, under the Deen of the King, except if Allah Willed (Q12:76).

Anyways, all the brothers knew that neither Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) was a thief, nor was his younger brother a thief.

So, their response (Q12:77) when the youngest brother was accused of theft is strange:

They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before.

They said: If he stealeth, a brother of his stole before.

Instead of worrying for the youngest brother, instead of trying to protect him and his reputation, instead of trying to prove him innocent, they immediately jumped on the 'official bandwagon' and accepted the accusation and the evidence. They sided with the one in power, and did not hesitate to slander both the youngest brothers, one of whom was being accused, and the other, as far as they knew, was never found since they had abandoned him in the dry well.

These were the elder sons of Jacob (Yaqub  عليه السلام), famously known as the Bani Israel.

In the following Hadith, a former Jew is making a statement about the character of his fellow Jews:

Narrated Anas: `Abdullah bin Salam heard the news of the arrival of Allah's Messenger () (at Medina) while he was on a farm collecting its fruits. So he came to the Prophet () and said, "I will ask you about three things which nobody knows unless he be a prophet. Firstly, what is the first portent of the Hour? What is the first meal of the people of Paradise? And what makes a baby look like its father or mother?'. The Prophet () said, "Just now Gabriel has informed me about that." `Abdullah said, "Gabriel?" The Prophet () said, "Yes." `Abdullah said, "He, among the angels is the enemy of the Jews." On that the Prophet () recited this Holy Verse: -- "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel (let him die in his fury!) for he has brought it (i.e. Qur'an) down to your heart by Allah's permission." (2.97) Then he added, "As for the first portent of the Hour, it will be a fire that will collect the people from the East to West. And as for the first meal of the people of Paradise, it will be the caudite (i.e. extra) lobe of the fish liver. And if a man's discharge proceeded that of the woman, then the child resembles the father, and if the woman's discharge proceeded that of the man, then the child resembles the mother." On hearing that, `Abdullah said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah, O, Allah's Messenger (); the Jews are liars, and if they should come to know that I have embraced Islam, they would accuse me of being a liar." In the meantime some Jews came (to the Prophet) and he asked them, "What is `Abdullah's status amongst you?" They replied, "He is the best amongst us, and he is our chief and the son of our chief." The Prophet () said, "What would you think if `Abdullah bin Salam embraced Islam?" They replied, "May Allah protect him from this!" Then `Abdullah came out and said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The Jews then said, "Abdullah is the worst of us and the son of the worst of us," and disparaged him. On that `Abdullah said, "O Allah's Messenger ()! This is what I was afraid of!"

In this world, many a times, we see people jumping to conclusions, or saying things untrue about someone. Slandering is a terrible crime, harming the reputation of a person. When someone is in trouble, when someone is accused of something, the decent thing to do is to consider the character of the person, and to avoid making statements, especially false statements.
