Parents & Our Deen

A solution to the challenges in the modern world

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Come! Let me recite to you what your Lord has forbidden to you: do not associate others with Him ˹in worship˺. ˹Do not fail to˺ honour your parents. Do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for you and for them. Do not come near indecencies, openly or secretly. Do not take a ˹human˺ life—made sacred by Allah—except with ˹legal˺ right. This is what He has commanded you, so perhaps you will understand.

And do not come near the wealth of the orphan—unless intending to enhance it—until they attain maturity. Give full measure and weigh with justice. We never require of any soul more than what it can afford. Whenever you speak, maintain justice—even regarding a close relative. And fulfil your covenant with Allah. This is what He has commanded you, so perhaps you will be mindful.

Indeed, that is My Path—perfectly straight. So follow it and do not follow other ways, for they will lead you away from His Way. This is what He has commanded you, so perhaps you will be conscious ˹of Allah˺.”

[Al-Quran 6:151-153, Translation: Dr Mustafa Khattab]

The Sacred & The Forbidden

As regards the instructions for attitude towards parents, the Arabic text uses the word 'اِحۡسَانًا' which is generally translated as good, yet the Arabic word 'اِحۡسَانًا' encompasses meanings of excellence, duty, charity, philanthropy, and kindness. The believer is being commanded that nothing but excellence towards the parents, in terms of behaviour, obedience, and providing for them, is the minimum requirement of expressing gratitude towards them.

The Quran rarely commands parents about their children, as it is natural for human parents to desire and strive for the best for their child(ren), regardless of their religious beliefs, or the lack of it.

The rare exception is where it commands people to not to kill their child(ren) because of, or due to the fear of, poverty. This a tragedy that has plagued humans from time immemorial, as child(ren) have been victims of planned parenthood and other such evil considerations.

Do not set up any other god with Allah, or you will end up condemned, abandoned.

For your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And honour your parents. If one or both of them reach old age in your care, never say to them ˹even˺ ‘ugh,’ nor yell at them. Rather, address them respectfully.

And be humble with them out of mercy, and pray, “My Lord! Be merciful to them as they raised me when I was young.

Your Lord knows best what is within yourselves. If you are righteous, He is certainly All-Forgiving to those who ˹constantly˺ turn to Him.

...

Do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Surely killing them is a heinous sin.

[Al-Quran 17:22-25, ... 31, Translation: Dr Mustafa Khattab]

Excellence with Parents

The Quran mentions the rights of parents immediately after insisting on strict monotheism: the worship of the one and only true deity: Allah  سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى‎ .  Again, the word used is  وَبِالۡوَالِدَيۡنِ اِحۡسَانًا . Excellence is the minimum standard.  Not even the minimum show of annoyance, the sound اُفٍّ is also banned from the vocabulary of the offspring towards the parent(s). The parents must be addressed respectfully. The wings of mercy must be lowered around them, lovingly protected in the arms of the child they once raised in their arms, and words of prayer have also been provided to pray for Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى 's all-encompassing mercy for them.

To those who fear poverty, they are commanded to not kill their children. They are reminded that their provision and their children's provision is provided by Allah  سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى . The killing of children is a خِطۡاً كَبِيۡرًا , that is, a huge error.

The family is central to the society. It is the cornerstone. It is important that the institution of family is maintained honourably. To that end, parents must be honoured, and children must be borne, so that the institution of family thrives. It is a part of our Deen to not to make changes in Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى 's creation:

So be steadfast in faith in all uprightness ˹O Prophet˺—the natural Way of Allah which He has instilled in ˹all˺ people. Let there be no change in this creation of Allah. That is the Straight Way, but most people do not know.

[Al-Quran 30:30, Translation: Dr Mustafa Khattab

So stand facing towards the Deen-e-Hanif; the separation by Allah upon which He has separated all humans. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the Standing Law, and yet most humans do not know.

[Al-Quran 30:30, Translation: Samiya Illias]

Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى chose our parents, and made us their progeny. He made mates, and He made offsprings. Moreover, He has decreed that not honouring the parents is forbidden in His Deen.

And ˹remember˺ when Luqmân said to his son, while advising him, “O my dear son! Never associate ˹anything˺ with Allah ˹in worship˺, for associating ˹others with Him˺ is truly the worst of all wrongs.”

And We have commanded people to ˹honour˺ their parents. Their mothers bore them through hardship upon hardship, and their weaning takes two years. So be grateful to Me and your parents. To Me is the final return.

But if they pressure you to associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them. Still keep their company in this world courteously, and follow the way of those who turn to Me ˹in devotion˺. Then to Me you will ˹all˺ return, and then I will inform you of what you used to do.

[Al-Quran 31:13-15, Translation: Dr Mustafa Khattab]

Attitude of Gratitude

The Quran informs us of the wisdom that Luqman was given, and quotes the wise sayings that Luqman said to his son. Nestled in between the wisdom, we read the 'Divine Will' that humans have been given regarding their parents: gratitude for Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and gratitude for parents, without setting up any partners for Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى

While parents are extremely honourable for their offsprings, yet they are not divine, nor do they share anything in the divinity of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى , the only deity. Abrahamic and polytheistic religions both honour the parents, yet polytheists attribute the divine to their parents. That is the worst mistake: attributing partners

An attitude of gratitude towards Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and towards one's parents is what is desired. Grateful for this life, and grateful for the people through whom Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى bestowed this life to us, acknowledging the hardships they went through for us, and honouring them for the sacrifices they endured.

[Al-Quran 19:12-15, ..., 32-34, Translation: Dr Mustafa Khattab]

And mention in the Book Ibrahim; (Abraham) surely he was most sincere, a Prophet. As he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which neither hears nor beholds, nor avails you anything? O my father, surely there has already come to me (something) of knowledge that did not come up to you; so closely follow me, and I will guide you on a level path. O my father, do not worship Ash-Shaytan; (The ever-vicious, i.e., the Devil) surely Ash-Shaytan has been most disobedient to The All-Merciful. O my Father, surely I fear that (some) torment from The All-Merciful will touch you, so that you become a patron to Ash-Shaytan."

Said he, "Do you desirously shirk from my gods, O Ibrahim? Indeed, in case you do not refrain, indeed I will definitely stone you; so forsake me for a long while." He said, "Peace be upon you! I will soon ask my Lord to forgive you; surely He has been Ever-Hospitable to me. And I keep apart from you and what you invoke apart from Allah; and I will invoke my Lord. It may be that in invoking my Lord, I will not be wretched." So, as soon as he kept apart from them and what they were worshiping apart from Allah, We bestowed upon him Ishaq and Yaaqub, (Isaac and Jacob, respectively) and each We made a Prophet.

[Al-Quran 19:41-49,  Translation: Dr Ghali]

 Good to their Parents

The Quran presents examples of John (Yahya عليه السلام), Jesus (Isa عليه السلام, son of Mary) and Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام). Each one of them was kind to their parent(s). Notice how gently and respectfully Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام) is addressing his father as 'O my Father (يٰۤـاَبَتِ)'. Even when Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام) is being thrown out of his father's house, he is saying 'Peace be upon you (سَلٰمٌ عَلَيۡكَ)', even stating that he will pray for him. Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام) did continue to pray for his father:

All praise is for Allah who has blessed me with Ishmael and Isaac in my old age. My Lord is indeed the Hearer of ˹all˺ prayers. My Lord! Make me and those ˹believers˺ of my descendants keep up prayer. Our Lord! Accept my prayers. Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when the judgment will come to pass.”

[Al-Quran 14:39-41, Translation: Dr Mustafa Khattab]

Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام) continued to pray for his father till it became apparent to him that his father was an enemy to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى (Q9:114-115). Q60:4-6 informs us that there is an excellent pattern in Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام) and those with him, except his praying for his polytheist father.

So Solomon smiled in amusement at her words, and prayed, “My Lord! Inspire me to ˹always˺ be thankful for Your favours which You have blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please you. Admit me, by Your mercy, into ˹the company of˺ Your righteous servants.”

[Al-Quran 27:19, Translation: Dr Mustafa Khattab]

We have commanded people to honour their parents. Their mothers bore them in hardship and delivered them in hardship. Their ˹period of˺ bearing and weaning is thirty months. In time, when the child reaches their prime at the age of forty, they pray, “My Lord! Inspire me to ˹always˺ be thankful for Your favours which You blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please You. And instil righteousness in my offspring. I truly repent to You, and I truly submit ˹to Your Will˺.”

[Al-Quran 46:15, Translation: Dr Mustafa Khattab]

Gratitude and Reform

In both these prayers, gratitude is being requested as an expression of the blessings of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى upon the self and upon the parent(s), and service that will please Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى .

In the second dua, the person is also praying for the reform of his offsprings.

Also notice that the wisdom to make such a request generally comes to humans around age forty.

Torah

The Ten Commandments includes the command to honour your father and your mother. They are mentioned twice: once in Exodus, and once in Deuteronomy.

More details in the Torah and later scriptures, include comprehensive guidance on how the family system is to flourish: parents are to discipline their children, as it is the key to a good foundation; there are clear edicts on how to deal with dissident, rebellious behaviour.

If only the People of the Book would have obeyed and implemented the Deen, they would have indeed flourished. Instead, they are now mired in moral issues assuming Biblical proportions. Intoxicated with technology, our world is deteriorating and increasing in corruption.

Modern Challenges

In the modern world, as technology is introducing new ideas and opportunities, it is also eroding parents status. While the past few decades have seen a decline in child(ren) respecting and obeying parents, most recently the transgender mania, in some countries, has worsened it for the parents, who are now required to affirm their child(ren)'s feelings, and cannot even prevent medical treatments and surgical procedures for their gender preferences, much to the detriment of the child(ren) who will have to endure irreversible harm as a consequence.

The decline of religious belief and non-adherence to the guidance in the scriptures, has opened the way for destroying the family, and the individual. It seems to be a build-up:

  • first the people were fed ideas about free love and liberty and equality,
  • then came freedom to work for women, enabled by sanitary and contraceptive solutions,
  • then old homes for parent(s) who had no one to take care of them,
  • then restraining parents from disciplining their child(ren),
  • then requiring parents to affirm their child(ren)'s feelings and gender preferences

The decadent West has gone through all of these in the past century or so, and now they themselves are horrified with the monstrous culture they have unleashed upon themselves.

Only reverting back to religion and upholding the guidance in the scriptures can counter the madness that is spreading globally. May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى preserve us and our families.

A Family Forever

At and around the Arsh of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى , prayers are being made for forgiveness and mercy for those who repent and follow the way of the Lord. The reward of those is the unification of all the reformed members of the family, in The Eternal Gardens, to dwell together.
