fighting to uphold the Trust and the Covenant || the central issue: the human family
The Combined Forces (33:7-9)
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ ٱتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًۭا ١
O Prophet, fear Allāh and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
وَٱتَّبِعْ مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًۭا ٢
And follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord. Indeed Allāh is ever, of what you do, Aware.
وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ وَكِيلًۭا ٣
And rely upon Allāh; and sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.

Surah alAhzaab (The Combined Forces) instructs the Prophet ﷺ to keep taqwa of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى , and not to obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites.

It stresses that a wife does not become a mother just by declaring 'zihar'; nor can adopted boys be real sons: it states that the right thing is to call a child by his biological father's name; it declares the exalted status of The Prophet ﷺ vis a vis the believers, and that his wives' are the believers' mothers; and then the status of the womb relatives closer than that of other believers and the immigrants, in the Book of Allah. ...
So, basically the biological family and ties are being stressed and highlighted, and false statements are being refuted.
Then, we read:
The Combined Forces (33:7-9)
وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِيثَـٰقَهُمْ وَمِنكَ وَمِن نُّوحٍۢ وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَى ٱبْنِ مَرْيَمَ ۖ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُم مِّيثَـٰقًا غَلِيظًۭا ٧
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when We took from the prophets their covenant and from you and from Noah and Abraham and Moses and Jesus, the son of Mary; and We took from them a solemn covenant
لِّيَسْـَٔلَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ عَن صِدْقِهِمْ ۚ وَأَعَدَّ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًۭا ٨
That He may question the truthful about their truth. And He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ جَآءَتْكُمْ جُنُودٌۭ فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًۭا وَجُنُودًۭا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرًا ٩
O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allāh upon you when armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a wind and armies [of angels] you did not see. And ever is Allāh, of what you do, Seeing.

The Covenant taken from the prophets and the believers is mentioned. And then comes the mention of war, of fighting in the cause of Allah, of not turning backs, of being true till the very end, of the combined forces (alAhzaab) that is the enemy alliance or coalition or companies, and in between all this is a strict commentary on the hypocrites. Then, we read:
The Combined Forces (33:21)
لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌۭ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًۭا ٢١
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allāh an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allāh and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allāh often.

The very next ayat goes on to praise the believers:
The Combined Forces (33:22-27)
وَلَمَّا رَءَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلْأَحْزَابَ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا مَا وَعَدَنَا ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَصَدَقَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚ وَمَا زَادَهُمْ إِلَّآ إِيمَـٰنًۭا وَتَسْلِيمًۭا ٢٢
And when the believers saw the companies, they said, "This is what Allāh and His Messenger had promised us, and Allāh and His Messenger spoke the truth." And it increased them only in faith and acceptance.
مِّنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ رِجَالٌۭ صَدَقُوا۟ مَا عَـٰهَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ ۖ فَمِنْهُم مَّن قَضَىٰ نَحْبَهُۥ وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَنتَظِرُ ۖ وَمَا بَدَّلُوا۟ تَبْدِيلًۭا ٢٣
Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allāh. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration -
لِّيَجْزِىَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ بِصِدْقِهِمْ وَيُعَذِّبَ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ إِن شَآءَ أَوْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا ٢٤
That Allāh may reward the truthful for their truth and punish the hypocrites if He wills or accept their repentance. Indeed, Allāh is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
وَرَدَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِغَيْظِهِمْ لَمْ يَنَالُوا۟ خَيْرًۭا ۚ وَكَفَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٱلْقِتَالَ ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ قَوِيًّا عَزِيزًۭا ٢٥
And Allāh repelled those who disbelieved, in their rage, not having obtained any good. And sufficient was Allāh for the believers in battle, and ever is Allāh Powerful and Exalted in Might.
وَأَنزَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَـٰهَرُوهُم مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ مِن صَيَاصِيهِمْ وَقَذَفَ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلرُّعْبَ فَرِيقًۭا تَقْتُلُونَ وَتَأْسِرُونَ فَرِيقًۭا ٢٦
And He brought down those who supported them among the People of the Scripture from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts [so that] a party [i.e., their men] you killed, and you took captive a party [i.e., the women and children].
وَأَوْرَثَكُمْ أَرْضَهُمْ وَدِيَـٰرَهُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلَهُمْ وَأَرْضًۭا لَّمْ تَطَـُٔوهَا ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرًۭا ٢٧
And He caused you to inherit their land and their homes and their properties and a land which you have not trodden. And ever is Allāh, over all things, competent.

So fighting in the cause of Allah is closely linked to family. All human beings alive now can trace their lineage to a common ancestor, known as MRCA (Most Recent Common Ancestor) in science. From the revealed scriptures, we believe that MRCA is Adam عليه السلام . We also believe that Satan and his forces are bent upon destroying the human family. They are doing all they can to morally corrupt and structurally destroy this cornerstone of human society. On one hand is the divine guidance and writ, and on the other is the way of life based on customs, cultures, and laws conjured by human minds and desires. They all are seemingly as diverse as atheistic, polytheistic, secular and all shades in between. Yet, they all are misguidance, with the final objective leading to ruin the family, if not immediately, then gradually over time. Even as of today, the jewish Israel, many Christian, and many Muslim nations, do not judge by the divinely revealed laws, nor do they strive to uphold the family guidance given in their scriptures. They live and rule, mostly and increasingly, by secular laws. This has led to increasing corruption in the way of life.
We need to understand this close link between religion and family, and the urgent need to adhere to the Divine guidance and writ, and to follow the example set by our dear Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the true believers. It is a matter of the covenant that has been ratified.
And so, the need to side with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and to submit to his directives:
The Combined Forces (33:56)
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ ۚ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ صَلُّوا۟ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا۟ تَسْلِيمًا ٥٦
Indeed, Allah showers His blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels pray for him. O believers! Invoke Allah’s blessings upon him, and salute him with worthy greetings of peace.

Surely, Allah and His angels send blessings to the Prophet. O you who believe, do pray Allah to bless him, and send your Salām (prayer for his being in peace) to him in abundance.

اللہ تعالیٰ اور اس کے فرشتے اس نبی پر رحمت بھیجتے ہیں۔ اے ایمان والو! تم (بھی) ان پر درود بھیجو اور خوب سلام (بھی) بھیجتے رہا کرو.[1]

[1]اس آیت میں نبی کریم (صلى الله عليه وسلم) کے اس مرتبہ و منزلت کا بیان ہے جو ملأ اعلیٰ (آسمانوں) میں آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) کو حاصل ہے اور وہ یہ کہ اللہ تبارک تعالیٰ فرشتوں میں آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) کی ثناو تعریف کرتا اور آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) پر رحمتیں بھیجتا ہے اور فرشتے بھی آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) کی بلندی درجات کی دعا کرتے ہیں۔ اس کے ساتھ ہی اللہ تعالیٰ نے عالم سفلی (اہل زمین) کو حکم دیا کہ وہ بھی آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) پر صلوٰۃ وسلام بھیجیں تاکہ آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) کی تعریف میں علوی اورسفلی دونوں عالم متحد ہوجائیں۔ حدیث میں آتا ہے، صحابہ کرام (رضي الله عنهم) نے عرض کیا، یا رسول اللہ ! سلام کا طریقہ تو ہم جانتے ہیں (یعنی التحیات میں السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ ! پڑھتے ہیں) ہم درود کس طرح پڑھیں؟ اس پر آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) نے وہ درود ابراہیمی بیان فرمایا جو نمازمیں پڑھا جاتا ہے۔ (صحيح بخاري، تفسير سورة الأحزاب) علاوہ ازیں احادیث میں درود کے اور بھی صیغے آتے ہیں، جو پڑھے جاسکتے ہیں۔ نیز مختصراً صلی اللہ علیٰ رسول اللہ وسلم بھی پڑھا جاسکتا ہے تاہم الصَّلاةُ وَالسَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ! پڑھنا اس لئے صحیح نہیں کہ اس میں نبی کریم (صلى الله عليه وسلم) سے خطاب ہے اور یہ صیغہ نبی کریم سے عام درود کے وقت منقول نہیں ہے اور تحیات میں السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ ! چونکہ آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) سے منقول ہے اس وجہ سے اس وقت میں پڑھنے میں کوئی قباحت نہیں مزید برآں اس کا پڑھنے والا اس فاسد عقیدے سے پڑھتا ہے کہ آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) اسے براہ راست سنتے ہیں۔ یہ عقیدہ فاسدہ قرآن و حدیث کے خلاف ہے اور اس عقیدے سے مذکورہ خانہ ساز درود پڑھنا بھی غیر صحیح ہے۔ اسی طرح اذان سے قبل اسے پڑھنا بھی بدعت ہے، جو ثواب نہیں، گناہ ہے۔ احادیث میں درود کی بڑی فضیلت وارد ہے۔ نماز میں اس کا پڑھنا واجب ہے یا سنت؟ جمہور علما اسے سنت سمجھتے ہیں اور امام شافعی اور بہت سے علما واجب۔ اور احادیث سے اس کے وجوب ہی کی تائید ہوتی ہے۔ اسی طرح احادیث سے یہ بھی معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ جس طرح آخری تشہد میں درود پڑھنا واجب ہے، پہلے تشہد میں بھی درود پڑھنے کی وہی حیثیت ہے۔ اس لئے نماز کے دونوں تشہد میں درود پڑھنا ضروری ہے۔اس کے دلائل مختصراً حسب ذیل ہیں۔ایک دلیل یہ ہے کہ مسند احمد میں صحیح سند سے مروی ہے کہ ایک شخص نے نبی کریم (صلى الله عليه وسلم) سے سوال کیا، یا رسول اللہ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) پر سلام کس طرح پڑھنا ہے، یہ تو ہم نے جان لیا (کہ ہم تشہد میں السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ پڑھتے ہیں) لیکن جب ہم نماز میں ہوں تو آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) پر درود کس طرح پڑھیں؟ تو آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) نے درود ابراہیمی کی تلقین فرمائی (الفتح الربانی، ج 4، ص 20۔21) مسند احمد کے علاوہ یہ روایت صحیح ابن حبان، سنن کبری بیہقی، مستدرک حاکم اور ابن خزیمہ میں بھی ہے۔ اس میں صراحت ہے کہ جس طرح سلام نماز میں پڑھا جاتا ہے یعنی تشہد میں، اسی طرح یہ سوال بھی نماز کے اندر درود پڑھنے سے متعلق تھا، نبی (صلى الله عليه وسلم) نے درود ابراہیمی پڑھنے کا حکم فرمایا۔ جس سے معلوم ہوا کہ نماز میں سلام کے ساتھ درود بھی پڑھنا چاہیئے، اور اس کا مقام تشہد ہے۔ اور حدیث میں یہ عام ہے، اسے پہلے یا دوسرے تشہد کے ساتھ خاص نہیں کیا گیا ہے جس سے یہ استدلال کرنا صحیح ہے کہ (پہلے اور دوسرے) دونوں تشہد میں سلام اور درود پڑھا جائے۔ اور جن روایات میں تشہد اول کا بغیر درود کے ذکر ہے، انہیں سورۂ احزاب کی آیت صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا کے نزول سے پہلے پر محمول کیا جائے گا۔ لیکن اس آیت کے نزول یعنی 5 ہجری کے بعد جب نبی (صلى الله عليه وسلم) نے صحابہ (رضي الله عنهم) کے استفسار پر درود کے الفاظ بھی بیان فرما دیئے تو اب نماز میں سلام کے ساتھ صلوٰۃ (درود شریف) کا پڑھنا بھی ضروری ہوگیا، چاہے وہ پہلا تشہد ہو یا دوسرا۔ اس کی ایک اور دلیل یہ ہے کہ حضرت عائشہ (رضی الله عنها) نے بیان فرمایا کہ نبی (صلى الله عليه وسلم) (بعض دفعہ) رات کو 9 رکعات ادا فرماتے، آٹھویں رکعت میں تشہد بیٹھتے تو اس میں اپنے رب سے دعا کرتے اور اس کے پیغمبر (صلى الله عليه وسلم) پر درود پڑھتے، پھر سلام پھیرے بغیر کھڑے ہوجاتے اور نویں رکعت پوری کرکے تشہد میں بیٹھتےتو اپنے رب سے دعا کرتے اور اس کے پیغمبر پر درود پڑھتے اور پھر دعا کرتے، پھر سلام پھیر دیتے (السنن الكبرى للبيهقي، ج2 ص704 طبع جديد سنن النسائي، مع التعليقات السلفية، كتاب قيام الليل، ج1 ص202۔ مزید ملاحظہ ہو، صفة صلاة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم للألباني صفحة 145) اس میں بالکل صراحت ہے کہ نبی (صلى الله عليه وسلم) نے اپنی رات کی نماز میں پہلے اور آخری دونوں تشہد میں درود پڑھا ہے۔ یہ اگرچہ نفلی نماز کا واقعہ ہے لیکن مذکورہ عمومی دلائل کی آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) کے اس عمل سے تائید ہوجاتی ہے، اس لئے اسے صرف نفلی نماز تک محدود کردینا صحیح نہیں ہوگا۔
خدا اور اس کے فرشتے پیغمبر پر درود بھیجتے ہیں۔ مومنو تم بھی ان پر دُرود اور سلام بھیجا کرو

یقینا اللہ اور اس کے فرشتے رحمتیں نازل کرتے ہیں نبی ﷺ پر } اے ایمان والو ! تم بھی آپ ﷺ پر رحمتیں اور سلام بھیجا کرو

Allah aur uske malaika (farishtey) Nabi par darood bhejte hain, Aey logon jo iman laye ho, tum bhi unpar darood o salaam bhejo
— Abul Ala Maududi(Roman Urdu)
اللہ اور اس کے فرشتے نبی پر رحمت بھیجتے ہیں اے ایمان والو، تم بھی اس پر درود وسلام بھیجو

Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and His angels are on the side of the Prophet, supporting him in his efforts to undertake the right reforms needed to protect and uphold the human family. Believers are directed to also side with the Prophet, and commit to the peace, submitting to his authority as Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى 's Prophet. I think this is the meaning that we need to embrace and live by. The peace that ensures that all segments of society are living in peace and safety. So, a few ayaat later, we read:
The Combined Forces (33:60-62)
۞ لَّئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ وَٱلْمُرْجِفُونَ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ لَنُغْرِيَنَّكَ بِهِمْ ثُمَّ لَا يُجَاوِرُونَكَ فِيهَآ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا ٦٠
If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease and those who spread rumors in al-Madīnah do not cease, We will surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little,
مَّلْعُونِينَ ۖ أَيْنَمَا ثُقِفُوٓا۟ أُخِذُوا۟ وَقُتِّلُوا۟ تَقْتِيلًۭا ٦١
Accursed wherever they are found, [being] seized and massacred completely.
سُنَّةَ ٱللَّهِ فِى ٱلَّذِينَ خَلَوْا۟ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّةِ ٱللَّهِ تَبْدِيلًۭا ٦٢
[This is] the established way of Allāh with those who passed on before; and you will not find in the way of Allāh any change.

So, the fight is against all those who are against the family system, its peace and security, as ordained by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى .
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى has entrusted humans, and they must uphold the trusts which they undertake, be it with Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى , or with His creations:
The Combined Forces (33:72-73)
إِنَّا عَرَضْنَا ٱلْأَمَانَةَ عَلَى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱلْجِبَالِ فَأَبَيْنَ أَن يَحْمِلْنَهَا وَأَشْفَقْنَ مِنْهَا وَحَمَلَهَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ ظَلُومًۭا جَهُولًۭا ٧٢
Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.
لِّيُعَذِّبَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَٱلْمُشْرِكَـٰتِ وَيَتُوبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۢا ٧٣
[It was] so that Allāh may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the men and women who associate others with Him and that Allāh may accept repentance from the believing men and believing women. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
