and the scriptures
12:21 & 12:56
Joseph (12:21)
The man from Egypt[1] who bought him said to his wife, “Take good care of him, perhaps he may be useful to us or we may adopt him as a son.” This is how We established Joseph in the land, so that We might teach him the interpretation of dreams. Allah’s Will always prevails, but most people do not know.
— Maulana Wahiduddin Khan
Joseph (12:56)
And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.
— Saheeh International
Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) was established in the land, in affluent polytheistic Ancient Egypt, at first, in the home of the Aziz, and later as a senior official in the government of the King, to settle wherever he wished.
So, in bondage, and when elevated in rank and freedom, the establishing of Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) in the land is described with the word (مَكَّنَّا) in both Q12:21 and Q12:56.
Ancient Egypt was an affluent land, with a luxurious economy.
All over the world, across history, many people have experienced luxuries, due to the flourishing of the economy. Where there is economic prosperity, the citizens, or the elites, at least, enjoy the luxuries of life. Along with the luxuries come opportunities and situations which test the moral compass.
There is an inbuilt morality in each human nafs, such that every person dislikes being cheated, robbed, lied to, insulted, disrespected, taken advantage of, and disapproves of killing, etc. Good people dislike it for others as well, and behave in a morally responsible manner.
Moreover, divine scriptures provide guidance as to what constitutes the Deen and the Shariah Laws, and what constitutes a sin and a crime. We know that Adam was given the mandate of Khilafat, to rule and judge as per Divine Law; that there were the Seven Laws of Noah; that there was the Suhuf-e-Ibrahim; Suhuf-e-Musa, and we are all aware of the existence of Torah, the Psalms of David, the books of the prophets, the Christian Bible, and The Quran.
Morality itself becomes subjective when divorced from divine guidance. So, we see many societies, established in the land, provided with livelihoods, morally decent in a secular way, while ignoring the divine laws. It is not that they do not have the scripture, or that they are unaware of it, yet they seem to not to believe in the repercussions in the life of the Hereafter. Very few are grateful, and gratitude itself is too little.

The Heights (7:10)
And We have certainly established you upon the earth and made for you therein ways of livelihood. Little are you grateful.
— Saheeh International
And We have given you (mankind) power in the earth, and appointed for you therein livelihoods. Little give ye thanks!
— M. Pickthall
— Fatah Muhammad Jalandhari
