, yet holding on to faith.
Jacob (Yaqub عليه السلام) was a man of vision, a prophet of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى .
When he heard of the vision shown to his son Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام), he advised him against sharing it with his brothers:
Joseph (12:5)
قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ لَا تَقْصُصْ رُءْيَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ إِخْوَتِكَ فَيَكِيدُوا۟ لَكَ كَيْدًا ۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ عَدُوٌّۭ مُّبِينٌۭ ٥
He said, “My son, do not relate your dream to your brothers, lest they should devise a plan against you. Surely, Satan is an open enemy for mankind.

He said: O my dear son! Tell not thy brethren of thy vision, lest they plot a plot against thee. Lo! Satan is for man an open foe.

یعقوب نے فرمایا : اے میرے پیارے بیٹے ! اپنا یہ خواب اپنے بھائیوں کے سامنے بیان نہ کرنا ورنہ وہ تمہارے خلاف کوئی سازش کریں گے یقیناً شیطان تو انسان کا کھلا دشمن ہے

اس کے باپ نے کہا کہ اے میرے بیٹے، تم اپنا یہ خواب اپنے بھائیوں کو نہ سنانا کہ وہ تمھارے خلاف کوئی سازش کرنے لگیں بے شک شیطان آدمی کا کھلا ہوا دشمن ہے

As we read, in spite of his advise, Satan got the better of his elder sons, and so they plotted against him, and had the beloved son removed from his father's presence. Alas, all he could do was be patient:
Joseph (12:17-18)
12:17
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ إِنَّا ذَهَبْنَا نَسْتَبِقُ وَتَرَكْنَا يُوسُفَ عِندَ مَتَـٰعِنَا فَأَكَلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ ۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ بِمُؤْمِنٍۢ لَّنَا وَلَوْ كُنَّا صَـٰدِقِينَ ١٧
They said, “Father, we went racing with one another, and left Yūsuf with our belongings, and the wolf ate him up. You will never believe us, howsoever truthful we may be.”

Saying: O our father! We went racing one with another, and left Joseph by our things, and the wolf devoured him, and thou believest not our saying even when we speak the truth.

انہوں نے کہا : ابا جان ! ہم جا کر دوڑ کا مقابلہ کرنے لگے اور ہم نے چھوڑ دیا تھا یوسف کو اپنے سامان کے پاس تو اسے کھالیا ایک بھیڑیے نے۔ اور آپ ہماری بات مانیں گے تو نہیں خواہ ہم کتنے ہی سچے ہوں

انھوں نے کہا کہ اے ہمارے باپ، ہم دوڑ کا مقابلہ کرنے لگے اور یوسف کو ہم نے اپنے سامان کے پاس چھوڑ دیا پھر اس کو بھیڑیا کھا گیا اور آپ ہماری بات کا یقین نہ کریں گے، چاہے ہم سچے ہوں

12:18
وَجَآءُو عَلَىٰ قَمِيصِهِۦ بِدَمٍۢ كَذِبٍۢ ۚ قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًۭا ۖ فَصَبْرٌۭ جَمِيلٌۭ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ ١٨
And they came with fake blood on his shirt. He said, “Rather, your inner desires have tempted you to do something. So, patience is best. It is Allah whose help is sought against what you describe.’’

And they came with false blood on his shirt. He said: Nay, but your minds have beguiled you into something. (My course is) comely patience. And Allah it is Whose help is to be sought in that (predicament) which ye describe.

اور وہ اس کی قمیص پر جھوٹ موٹ کا خون بھی لگا لائے حضرت یعقوب نے فرمایا : (واقعہ یوں نہیں) بلکہ تمہارے نفسوں نے تمہارے لیے ایک بڑے کام کو آسان بنا دیا ہے اب صبر ہی بہتر ہے اور اللہ ہی کی مدد طلب کی جاسکتی ہے اس پر جو تم بیان کر رہے ہو

اور وہ یوسف کی قمیص پر جھوٹا خون لگاکر لے آئے باپ نے کہا نہیں ، بلکہ تمھارے نفس نے تمھارے ليے ایک بات بنادی ہے اب صبر ہی بہتر ہے اور جو بات تم ظاہر کر رہے ہو، اس پر اللہ ہی سے مدد مانگتا ہوں

Jacob (Yaqub عليه السلام) was patient over the loss of his beloved son, and the story concocted by his other sons. He sought Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى 's help.
Several years later, the same sons sought permission to take their youngest brother to Egypt.
Jacob (Yaqub عليه السلام) advised them:
Joseph (12:66-68)
12:66
قَالَ لَنْ أُرْسِلَهُۥ مَعَكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تُؤْتُونِ مَوْثِقًۭا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَتَأْتُنَّنِى بِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يُحَاطَ بِكُمْ ۖ فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌۭ ٦٦
He said, “I shall never send him with you until you give me a pledge in the name of Allah that you will definitely bring him back to me, unless you are overpowered (by circumstances).” So, when they gave him their pledge, he said, “Allah is watchful over what we say.”

He said: I will not send him with you till ye give me an undertaking in the name of Allah that ye will bring him back to me, unless ye are surrounded. And when they gave him their undertaking he said: Allah is the Warden over what we say.

یعقوب نے فرمایا : میں اسے (واپس) ہرگز نہیں بھیجوں گا تمہارے ساتھ یہاں تک کہ تم میرے سامنے پختہ قسم کھاؤ اللہ کی کہ تم لازماً اسے لے کر آؤ گے میرے پاس سوائے اس کے کہ تم سب کو گھیرے میں لے لیاجائے پھر جب انہوں نے آپ کو اپنا پختہ قول وقرار دے دیا تو یعقوب نے فرمایا کہ جو کچھ ہم کہہ رہے ہیں اللہ اس پر نگہبان ہے

یعقوب نے کہا، میں اس کو تمھارے ساتھ ہرگز نہ بھیجوں گا جب تک تم مجھ سے خدا کے نام پر یہ عہد نہ کرو کہ تم اس کو ضرور میرے پاس لے آؤ گے، الا یہ کہ تم سب گھِر جاؤ پھر جب انھوں نے اس کو اپنا پکا قول دے دیا، اس نے کہا کہ جو ہم کہہ رہے ہیں اس پر اللہ نگہبان ہے

12:67
وَقَالَ يَـٰبَنِىَّ لَا تَدْخُلُوا۟ مِنۢ بَابٍۢ وَٰحِدٍۢ وَٱدْخُلُوا۟ مِنْ أَبْوَٰبٍۢ مُّتَفَرِّقَةٍۢ ۖ وَمَآ أُغْنِى عَنكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ ۖ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَعَلَيْهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ ٦٧
And he said, “O my sons, do not enter (the city) all of you from the same gate, rather, enter from different gates. And I cannot help you in any way against (the will of) Allah. Sovereignty belongs to none but Allah. In Him I place my trust, and all those who trust should trust in Him alone.”

And he said: O my sons! Go not in by one gate; go in by different gates. I can naught avail you as against Allah. Lo! the decision rests with Allah only. In Him do I put my trust, and in Him let all the trusting put their trust.

اور آپ نے کہا : اے میرے بیٹو ! تم لوگ ایک دروازے سے (شہر میں) داخل نہ ہونا بلکہ متفرق دروازوں سے داخل ہونا اور میں تم کو بچا نہیں سکتا اللہ (کے فیصلے) سے کچھ بھی اختیار مطلق تو صرف اللہ ہی کا ہے اسی پر میں نے توکلّ کیا ہے اور تمام توکل کرنے والوں کو اسی پر توکل کرنا چاہیے

اور یعقوب نے کہا کہ اے میرے بیٹو، تم سب ایک ہی دروازے سے داخل نہ ہونا بلکہ الگ الگ دروازوں سے داخل ہونا اور میں تم کو اللہ کی کسی بات سے نہیں بچاسکتا حکم تو بس اللہ کا ہے میں اسی پر بھروسہ رکھتا ہوں اور بھروسہ کرنے والوں کو اسی پر بھروسہ کرنا چاہيے

12:68
وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُم مَّا كَانَ يُغْنِى عَنْهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةًۭ فِى نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَىٰهَا ۚ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذُو عِلْمٍۢ لِّمَا عَلَّمْنَـٰهُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٦٨
And (recall) when they entered (the city) in the manner their father had advised them. He could not help them in any way against (the will of) Allah, but it was just an urge in the heart of Ya‘qūb which he satisfied; he was a man of knowledge, because We had taught him, but most of the people do not know.

And when they entered in the manner which their father had enjoined, it would have naught availed them as against Allah; it was but a need of Jacob's soul which he thus satisfied; and lo! he was a lord of knowledge because We had taught him; but most of mankind know not.

تو جب وہ داخل ہوئے جہاں سے انہیں حکم دیا تھا ان کے والد نے وہ (یعقوب) بچانے والا نہیں تھا ان کو اللہ (کے فیصلے) سے کچھ بھی سوائے اس کے کہ یعقوب کے دل میں ایک خیال تھا جو اس نے اسے پورا کرلیا اور یقیناً آپ صاحب علم تھے اس علم کے اعتبار سے جو ہم نے آپ کو سکھایا تھا لیکن اکثر لوگ جانتے نہیں ہیں

اور جب وہ داخل ہوئے جہاں سے ان کے باپ نے ان کو ہدایت کی تھی، وہ ان کو نہیں بچا سکتا تھا اللہ کی کسی بات سے وہ بس یعقوب کے دل میں ایک خیال تھا جو اس نے پورا کیا بے شک وہ ہماری دی ہوئی تعلیم سے صاحب علم تھا مگر اکثر لوگ نہیں جانتے

Jacob (Yaqub ...) tried to advise according to his knowledge and wisdom, yet the decision is always with Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى . So, the story unfolded exactly according to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى 's decree.
The beautiful thing about Jacob (Yaqub عليه السلام) is his unwavering faith and patience:
Joseph (12:86-87)
12:86
قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ٨٦
He said, “I do not complain of my anguish and sorrow to anyone but Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know.

He said: I expose my distress and anguish only unto Allah, and I know from Allah that which ye know not.

یعقوب نے فرمایا : میں اپنی پریشانی اور اپنے غم کی فریاد اللہ ہی سے کرتا ہوں اور میں اللہ کی طرف سے وہ کچھ جانتا ہوں جو تم لوگ نہیں جانتے ہو

اس نے کہا، میں اپنی پریشانی اور اپنے غم کا شکوہ صرف اللہ سے کرتا ہوں اور میں اللہ کی طرف سے وہ باتیں جانتا ہوں جو تم نہیں جانتے

12:87
يَـٰبَنِىَّ ٱذْهَبُوا۟ فَتَحَسَّسُوا۟ مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَا۟يْـَٔسُوا۟ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يَا۟يْـَٔسُ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْقَوْمُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ ٨٧
O my sons, go and search for Yūsuf and his brother, and do not lose hope in the mercy of Allah. In fact, only the infidels lose hope in Allah’s mercy.”

Go, O my sons, and ascertain concerning Joseph and his brother, and despair not of the Spirit of Allah. Lo! none despaireth of the Spirit of Allah save disbelieving folk.

اے میرے بیٹو ! جاؤ اور تلاش کرو یوسف کو بھی اور اس کے بھائی کو بھی اور اللہ کی رحمت سے مایوس نہ ہونا یقیناً اللہ کی رحمت سے مایوس تو بس کافر ہی ہوتے ہیں

اے میرے بیٹو، جاؤ یوسف اور اس کے بھائی کی تلاش کرو اور اللہ کی رحمت سے نا امید نہ ہو اللہ کی رحمت سے صرف منکر ہی ناامید ہوتے ہیں

Twice he tried to protect his beloved youngest sons.
Twice he was outwitted.
Both times, he held onto faith, and patiently endured the circumstances and the separation.
He did not lose hope in the Mercy of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى .
